Ten Commandments in Duluth

DULUTH -- Richard Kacer, 49, a heavy-equipment operator, paused on the sidewalk a few feet from the Ten Commandments monument on the lawn outside Duluth City Hall to offer his opinion about the civil liberties advocates who are suing to have the 2,500-pound block of granite removed.

"We already know where they're headed, anyway," Kacer said. "To Hell."

The 72-inch-tall monument ignites passions -- fueled by the Minnesota Civil Liberties Union, which announced last week that it had filed suit against the city to remove it on the grounds that the monument violates the U.S. Constitution and the Minnesota Constitution by endorsing religious views promoted by the Christian and Jewish faiths.

City officials have been flooded with messages from people who want the monument to stay put.

3. Perhaps we could take up a little collection for a new monument.
We could have one with a pentacle or perhaps a little something from the Koran. In the long run it might be easier and cheaper than running these cases through the courts one at a time. If they want religion, we can give them religion.
