ROME - The government of Premier Silvio Berlusconi said Tuesday that an investigation into his media empire will go ahead, reversing a decision by the justice minister that split the governing coalition.
The Christian Democratic Party had threatened to quit Berlusconi's 2-year-old center-right government, which has a comfortable majority in Parliament.
The announcement from Deputy Premier Gianfranco Fini in the Senate took the wind from a no-confidence vote against Justice Minister Roberto Castelli. The Senate vote, sought by the center-left opposition, was scheduled for Tuesday night but he was expected to survive.
"The investigations will run their course," Fini told the Senate, saying Berlusconi himself had urged the probe to go forward.
