House votes to defund ACORN
Source: Associated Press

WASHINGTON — The House has voted to deny all federal funding for ACORN, the community organizing group that has been caught up in several scandals.

The House action came several days after the Senate took a similar vote to block the Housing and Urban Development Department from giving grants to ACORN.

Republicans, long critics of the liberal-leaning group that advocates for the poor, led the effort to cut off all federal funds.

California Republican Darrell Issa, who sponsored the measure in the House, says the "scandal surrounding the criminal activities of ACORN have called into question their role in all aspects of government."

4. 345-75. All 75 no votes were Democrats.
The vote, on a provision attached to a student aid bill, was 345-75. All 75 no votes were Democrats.

Edited on Thu Sep-17-09 02:30 PM by stuball111
Seems like you can vote in a vast majority, and some clowns on fux "news" can make a phony entrapment video, and the party in power bends to a minority to de-fund an organization that has done more good than harm, thus leaving the innocent out to dry because of a few bad apples. Some fucking Democracy! Why don't the Dems just all stay in the truck and hand the whole thing back to the shit heads who screwed everything up in the first place, or better yet, let Beck/Hannity/Limbaugh/O'Rielly/ Freedomworks/Joe the fucking plumber/Sarah Palin/and all the rest of those dickbrains run the show? Might as fucking well, seems they are doing it anyway!:puke: :grr:      :hide:

22. Yep...:)
The concept we accept as Democracy is a system that invariably results in mob rule. People say "you have to vote, people have died for your right to vote", actually, people have died for my right not to vote, its a very subtle difference.

I long for the day that after a general election that Olberman or Matthews sits in front of America and say "Noone voted in the election".

Now that is when we will see real democracy at work..

America could conceivably be socialist without changing our political system. Indeed, some say it already is or soon will be socialist.

31. 6 Acorn employees isn't even 1% of their force but let's say the next time
1% of House members or 1% of America's crazy uncles in the Senate are caught behaving unprofessionally, we cut funding to that body. What is that? 2 members and 1 Senator?

Thank GOODNESS we have a man of Porter Goss's caliber heading up the House Ethics Office! If someone refuses to behave, he can just use his old skills and assassinate them.

53. Liberal on the issues and non-partisan are not mutually exclusive
http://www.acorn.org/index.php?id=12341

"ACORN is the nation’s largest grassroots community organization of low- and moderate-income people with over 400,000 member families organized into more than 1,200 neighborhood chapters in about 75 cities across the country. Since 1970, ACORN has been building community organizations that are committed to social and economic justice, and won victories on thousands of issues of concern to our members, through direct action, negotiation, legislative advocacy and voter participation. ACORN helps those who have historically been locked out become powerful players in our democratic system."

They are more liberal than the Democratic Party except during election season. Would you prefer they turn off or turn away Republicans and Independents who need help? Why are you so interested in throwing them under the bus? I get it, it is easy to do and politically expedient so might as well do it and they hire Republicans and Independents too, right?

The most recent example of liberal on the issues but non-partisan were candidates for judge in my community. People and organizations can be liberal and non-partisan.
