AP-ME GEN IRAQ EXPLOSIONS
Rocket explosions heard in central Baghdad

BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) - At least 10 rockets detonated Sunday night in central Baghdad, near an area that houses the headquarters of the U.S.-led coalition. Sirens blared for several minutes, and smoke and flames were briefly visible.

The former Ministry of Foreign Affairs was on fire, a witness said. The building was severely damaged by U.S. bombing during the war last year. A U.S. military mess hall sits behind the building.

There was no immediate word on casualties.

The rockets struck on the northern edge of the Green Zone, which houses the coalition headquarters.

21. Reuters report
BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Mortar fire has rung out across Baghdad as warning sirens sounded at the headquarters of the U.S.-led administration in the capital.

The sirens rang out from the base in one of Saddam Hussein's former palace complexes now known as the "Green Zone", the heavily fortified headquarters of the occupying powers in Iraq. The headquarters has repeatedly come under rocket and mortar attack in recent months.

The U.S. military said it had no immediate information on the blasts

The military has no immediate information????? Christ, they are in the center of it!

to them..he said when they get a box of snacks and food its gone in 10 minutes..theres 250 guys in his unit, and here is their address:

428th Military Police Company
Baghdad, Iraq
APO/AE 09342

if you get a chance these kids would sure love candy, chips, chapstick, any kind of food cause they hate the MREs and miss the stuff they could eat here. My husband and I send a couple boxes a week. It just means a lot to them I guess to get some stuff..michael said they dont get much from home right now, so if you want to send them what they like, its appreciated.

stating what is in the package, thats all..they have them at all the post offices . It is cheap and easy to send, it just seems to take a while to reach Baghdad. We just stick a ton of chips and cookies and candy in a large box, seal it up good, and send it. We also send him tons of beef jerky.

27. How to defend against old washing machine timers & rockets?
Edited on Sun Mar-07-04 12:14 PM by Mika
Just heard it on CNN - washing machine timers are being used to timer delay the attacks from as far as 40km away. That's why we can't catch them.

Do we have any Kenmore timer detection units in the military? How can we defend against this? (I know we can't. We have to leave -now.)

48. No, it's a 1st Sgt...

<snip>
Iraqi police said there were no casualties from the car bomb, which detonated outside the building. There was no immediate word on casualties from the rocket attacks.

Inside the Green Zone, employees at the Baghdad Convention Center, where the U.S. military press office is based, fled into the basement, said Army 1st Sgt. Stephen Valley, a military spokesman.

"Everyone's OK. Everyone's been accounted for," Valley said. "They're all down in the basement."

Shortly after the blasts, a U.S. Army OH-58 Kiowa helicopter, a surveillance aircraft, and an Apache helicopter flew low over the Tigris River, possibly to seek out the heat signature of the rocket launchers. The helicopters use infrared sights to seek out the heat left by the rocket tubes.
