Obama heckled by GOP during speech to Congress

(AP) – 16 minutes ago

WASHINGTON — The nastiness of August reached from the nation's town halls into the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday as President Barack Obama tried to move his health care plan forward.

South Carolina Republican Rep. Joe Wilson shouted "You lie!" after Obama had talked about illegal immigrants.

It wasn't the only interruption during Obama's speech to a joint session of Congress in the House of Representatives. Earlier, Republicans laughed when Obama acknowledged that there are still significant details to be worked out before a health overhaul can be passed.

Wilson's outburst caused Obama to pause briefly before he went on with his speech. Overhead in the visitors' gallery, first Lady Michelle Obama shook her head from side to side.

168. Give them enough rope and they hang themselves..
As bad as it is, as disrespectful as it is, you have to consider it is great politics. The entire world gets to observe how one party is trying to move USA ahead and another has resorted to disrespect and obstruction. Any reasonable person paying attention to our current political situation will quickly rule out the GOP as being a party truly interested in the future of USA. It all reminds me of the old Syndey Poitier movies where the respectable, adept individual is hounded to no end but keeps working and in the end earns the respect for all that meet him. All this is making Obama and the democrats look good, and the GOP look bad. I work with several republicans and although a few have become even more radical, some are now turning away from the GOP because they just can't be part of this crazy atmosphere anymore. The GOP is turning their own party against itself, with the radical against the moderates.

Now we can hope Obama will be able hold the democrats together through the next full moon... as we might have some democrats that are very close to needing strait jacket time as well

Only in South Carolina! Let's see now, you have a Governor about to be impeached for lying and leaving the State to run itself, You have a Lt. Governor who lying about his (He was a Cheerleader) sexual orientation, . You have a man in Jim Demint, who a walking lunatic. You have a mouth of the south in Lindsey Graham, You have a Attorney General after only one day of investigation, stated Governor Sanford hadn't broke any laws. You have a rebel flag on the grounds of the State Capitol that represent an abomination by God. You have a status of Strom Thurmond on the State Capitol, who was a staunch Dixiecrat, a segregationist and a liar. And just for good measure, you have Miss Teen America (Have anyone given her a flag yet), and a man who had sex with a horse. Now, you have a Bozo, who will be known as the idiot who disrespected the President of the United States. Good people of South Carolina, these are your Leaders! You and these crazies are officially a laughing stock of this nation.

183. Not to mention Lindsay Graham....
Now as a gay man I abhor the "outing" of individuals. I think a person's decision to go public with his/her orientation is a deeply personal thing whether that is opening to family, friends, work, church/mosque, etc.

But I draw the line when you have public figures that are hypocrites. I don't know if Lindsay Graham is gay or not but there have been lots of rumors. While I haven't seen or heard him froth at the mouth on the family values issues, his voting record on GLBT issues is abhorrent. He votes with the pack on the far right.

So you have another one for S.C., an alleged closeted homosexual serving in the U.S. Senate voting against his own self-interests as a gay man (if he is).

241. I don't find gay Republicans any more reprehensible than hetero Republicans.
Edited on Thu Sep-10-09 01:01 PM by No Elephants
I can bash folks for voting for DOMA, whether or not those folks are hetero or gay, Dem of Pub. I can also bash folks for being Republican, whether they are hetero or gay. I can also think of a thousand reasons to diss Lindsey Graham, but his orientation--whatever it may be--is his business.

IMO, gay Republicans are no more and no less objectionable than hetero Republicans.

As far as being a hypocrite. we don't know that. For instance, most people believe cheating on a spouse is wrong, yet something like 50% of people cheat. That does not make them hypocrites. It only makes them unable to live up to their own ideals. Which makes them human beings with human failings.

He can believe that he is gay and still genuinely believe with all his heart and soul that gay people should not get Social Security of their spouses. I feel sorry for him if he has that kind of self loathing for no good reason. But, it does not mean he is a hypocrite.

i don't care if mark sanford had an affair or if lindsey graham is gay. however, i do care that mark sanford, who had an affair, is against marriage for gay and lesbian people. likewise with lindsey, who is rumored to be gay. it's not their human failings that makes them hypocrites, it's their political stances. graham can most certainly be a self-hating gay who hates other gay people too, and it certainly seems that he is. that makes him a hypocrite also.

182. It Wasn't Just Wilson
When I witnessed the boorish behavior of many Republicans at last night's address, I thought about the town halls. It wasn't just Congressman Wilson, although certainly his offense was the most egregious. Lots of them were booing and clucking at our President.

I have a little more sympathy for emotional displays from the herd of citizens opposed to health care reform. They have been whipped into a state of fear by Fox News and elected officials. Sadly, many Conservatives have have no problem spreading lies and inaccuracies because they would rather health care go down in defeat than to give Obama and the Democrats a political victory.

The tea baggers who shout at Townhalls can claim ignorance and fear. They can claim their emotions got the better of them. I expect better from public servants while sitting in the House Chamber with the President of the United States in front of them. If our elected officials can't show respect for their own office and the President of the United States, it is no wonder the tea baggers are so rude.

No they weren't! I didn't hear any booing. What I did see is stone faced fools who, as usual with Repugs these days, already made up their minds and weren't listening except for moments to NOT applaud and NOT get with the program....y'know, the Party of No. They were silently booing....but not actually booing.

We don't need to exaggerate, y'know. We can tell it like it is.

Barney Frank got it right when he talked to Rachel Maddow.... Let 'em yell. It's a free country. But it just shows their utter frustration and helplessness. They're obsolete.

They have no ideas. The rebuttal was "most Americans want us to start over" which is a complete fantasy. Most Americans want reform NOW.

The politest comment on your outburst is this:

Show some respect.
You've embarrased yourself.
You've embarrased the Republican Party.
You've embarrased America.

This is of course, a punkass dodge. Its not like he couldn't have a forwarder send that email account's content to any other location to "better be able to respond to your concerns".

The link works (http://www.house.gov/formwilson/IMA/issue.htm) - but sends you to a form with umpteen "required fields", thereby putting up more roadblocks and delaying people to the point where they just give up. God forbid a simple email would suffice.

A lack of self control is now sufficient excuse for violating the Rules of Congress?

I see your opponent has raised over $50,000 since you shamed your district and your state. And your mother.

If you are not in control of your actions you should not be allowed to vote or own property. Or sit in Congress. You should have a guardian and a diaper.

If you had any honor, you would resign. But nobody expects honor from a Republican anymore. Say hello to Governor Sanford. Neither one of you has any self control.

You Classless Jerk

How dare you call the President a liar during his address of Congress. I have never witnessed such abhorrent behavior from a Republican and that includes the ones who like to pay hookers to dress them up in diapers and the ones who solicit men for sex in airport bathrooms. I will do everything in my power, including donating money to your opponent in the next election to insure you don't get re-elected and that's the truth.

10. Is this how it will be for 3 more years, hopefully 4 after that
A continuing smaller segment of the population acting like immature brats because their person is no longer up there. What will it take to get some regular adult behavior in those chambers? Oh, I'm sorry, what should I have expected these are politicians wind up acting no better than some kind of gangsters in nice suits sometimes. Geez.

Keep it down, Joe Wilson. Stop blaming others what you are more likely projecting about yourself.

Certainly the previous president never earned any thinking person's respect, but in the midst of a speech like that you STFU and listen because it's the POTUS speaking.

It shows the contempt with which he evidently holds the very idea of democracy...

These are authoritarian conservatives. Studies have shown they are highly undemocratic in their thinking. They support wingnuts with guns trying to intimidate politicians, they support voter suppression and election fraud, they commit tons of crimes in office.

They have always had these attitudes, its just that now the veil has been lifted and everyone can see it.

56. yep
Maybe an unexpected blessing of having a black moderate president (I don't think of Obama as especially "liberal") is that they are having a harder time maintaining a veneer of respectability. As they become unhinged by the reality of who is in office they unintentionally reveal just how antidemocratic they really are, which could really take a huge bite out of the RW's already-waning political clout.

The downside, of course, is that the crazies might also get more violent, and we've seen plenty of signs of that, too.

How long has this tool been in office?
Did he make the same comment during the "WMD" presentations as the wing-nuts made their case for invading Iraq, including a State of the Union Address?
(I'm just kidding - I know he would have shown utmost respect for "*" :puke: :puke: :puke:)

I've sent the following to him:

Sir - and I use that address with more respect than you have shown the President of the United States:

Since it seems that you have served terms that date back into the Bush administration, where were your comments when the lies regarding the "Weapons of Mass Destruction" were presented?

Yeah, that's what I thought - they were lies given to you as you followed "lock-step" in line with your political agenda - wrong as it has proven to be.

You should hang your head in shame - but then again, I'm guessing you have NO idea about what shame is.

I ache for the shame that you have brought on to your wonderful state - and the sacred Halls of Congress.

when dems did it it was to advance the dialogue and bring about a better tomorrow.

When reps did it it was because they are racist and hate freedom.

Is that about right? Did I cover all the talking points?

54. They have stepped over the line
and they are losing followers. We saw a patient in the clinic who last fall was all for Sarah Palin--and she said the GOP were idiots for dissing Obama's speech to the schoolkids. I gave her the link to the health care bill and told her a bit about it. She was very receptive. The GOP forgot they ingrained in their followers respect for the Presidency.

64. UPDATE
Late Update: Even too much for the haters? Rep. Wilson has reportedly now apologized for his outburst. His statement: "This evening I let my emotions get the best of me when listening to the President's remarks regarding the coverage of illegal immigrants in the health care bill. While I disagree with the President's statement, my comments were inappropriate and regrettable. I extend sincere apologies to the President for this lack of civility."

Dear Representative Wilson,

You are a disgrace to South Carolina.

You have brought dishonor to the House of Representatives.

You have brought shame to the Republican Party.

You will forever be stained by your unconsionable and boorish behavor during tonight's Presidential Address.

The American People do not deserve you representing them.

Resign immediately.

NBachers

On Edit: I got the following email message back when I submitted my email:

"UNATTENDED MAILBOX

I sincerely appreciate your taking the time to contact me. In an effort to better serve you, please visit my website at www.joewilson.house.gov or click this link provided http://www.house.gov/formwilson/IMA/issue.htm for your e-mail needs. From my website, I will be better able to respond to your concerns."

I went to the link and it had the usual name, address, etc. fill-out, and pasted the message into the comments section. I used my own name and email, but I googled a Bojangles Chicken 'n' Biscuits address in Columbia, SC and used it as my address. It went through fine.

One of those "working for a company with no insurance" stories. I used to be a real spelling nazi, but my one good eye sometimes feels like a worn-out retread. I don't always catch spelling mistakes anymore. I guess I'll have to use spell-check more often now.

You are not dealing with reality. These people are not reasonable or rational. They are evil, hateful and do not even give powerless animals the common courtesy of life.

95. My Letter to Rep. Joe Wilson (Wingnut -SC)
Subject: Your Reprehensible Behavior

Body

Rep. Wilson,

I have to say I was shocked by your appalling lack of civility and respect for not just the President of the United States personally, but for the Office of the President. The joint session was called by President Obama in his constitutional capacity as the Chief Executive Officer of the coequal Executive branch of our nation's government. This wasn't some town hall in a gym. Your interruption of his speech to the joint session was inexcusable breech of decorum between the branches of government, not to mention rude beyond anything that would EVER been tolerated by your party if aimed at the Former President, George W. Bush by a Democratic Representative.

The WORST part was that your accusation that the President was lying was absolutely and demonstrably false. According to HR 3200 Sec 246:

H.R. 3200: Sec 246 — NO FEDERAL PAYMENT FOR UNDOCUMENTED ALIENS

Nothing in this subtitle shall allow Federal payments for affordability credits on behalf of individuals who are not lawfully present in the United States

So you were not only egregiously disrespectful - in a feed broadcast around the WORLD, embarrassing not just yourself but your country, but you were completely wrong about the Bill most likely to come out of YOUR house of congress.

BTW your written non-apology is completely inadequate - since it hinges on your assertion that "I disagree with the President’s statement..." It wasn't a "statement" President Obama was stating a FACT. Facts aren't a matter of opinion. You might as well "disagree" with a statement that the earth revolves around the sun.

For the sake of the Nation and all of us interested in serious and sincere efforts to reform a health care system, that is shedding 14,000 people a month, and has led to more than 50% of the nations bankruptcies, you should resign. Leave the serious work of legislation to serious people, not immature kindergarten level dogamatists.

To help make sure that happens - regardless of whether you have enough respect for this nation to resign - I am donating money to your opponent, Rob Miller for SC-02. I hope we will be rid of you soon, one way or the other.

With Sincere Disappointment and Contempt,

Douglas S. Williams

139. There is a precedent
TED KOPPEL (ABC host): When the president talked about the bankruptcy of Social Security, there were clearly some Democrats on the floor who thought that that was taking it too far. And they did something that, apparently, no one at this table has ever heard before. They booed.

JOHN ROBERTS (CBS White House correspondent): At a couple points in this address, it looked more like the British Parliament than the United States Congress. I’ve never heard the minority party shout at the president during the State of the Union address.

JOE SCARBOROUGH (former U.S. representative (R-FL) and MSNBC host): After the Democrats booed and hissed, Republicans were on the floor saying, you know, we never once did that to Clinton. So every time he would talk about Social Security, the roars got a little louder. And they got behind their president.

BOB BARR (former U.S. representative (R-GA) and CNN contributor): It will be a very, very difficult battle as we saw by the unprecedented and, I think, highly improper virtual booing of the president when he simply said that the system is going to be bankrupt and the time is now to fix it.

153. Imagine if any Dem had dared to do this to W . . . !!! IMO, we should be
Edited on Thu Sep-10-09 02:26 AM by defendandprotect
as vocal and angry about this as they would be!

OTOH . . . I'm hoping that this is a sign that the "for profit" health care industry

is putting intense pressure on the GOP -- and causing them to have to search for their

"thugs" to put them on the streets!!

I don't want to act like a Repug -- but I do hope that during this week people who are

aware of what happened here will be commenting on it -- to one another -- to Wilson and

the GOP, in general -- and to MSM . . !!!

Kinda looks like the GOP is having a nervous breakdown ... ????

he said sorry in a half ass way (which I don't think is sincere by the way and I think has more to do with protecting their public image)
Let's continue supporting his political rival and digging his dirt. If that's the way they use their democracy and freedom, then we'll gladly use our own freedom to uncover every crap that they're hiding.

http://www.thenation.com/blogs/notion/471063/challenger_to_you_lie_congressman_cashes_in_after_speech

"The words "you lie" will live in infamy for Joe Wilson, the overheated Republican Congressman who shouted at President Obama during his address to a joint session of Congress on Wednesday. Beyond criticism and a swift apology, the incident has already provided a fundraising bonanza for Wilson's opponent, Rob Miller, a Democrat and Marine Corps veteran."

It says Miller has raised $50,000 since Wilson's diarrhea of the mouth. Surely we can do better than $50,000, don't you think?

175. Just what does that mean?

Your implication that the Repubs are somehow the hapless victims of Obama's policies is wrong.

Your implication that an Iraqi press conference is somehow the same as a joint session of congress is wrong.

Your implication that Joe Wilson and an Iraqi reporter are somehow held to the same standard is wrong.

Your implication that an unjust war based on lies is the same as the healthcare debate is wrong.

False Equivalency - its all the rage!

He showed blatant disrespect for the President and what he did at a joint session of Congress was wrong.

And I'd say that regardless of whether a Democrat or Republican was the heckler and whether a Democrat or Republican was the President.

187. Republicans are bullies with no substance
And like the schoolyard variety, they act out from insecurity and fear. Not that they don't cause disruption, but Obama has proven over and over that he can put bullies in their place.

It was incredibly disrespectful for a member of congress to disrupt the president, more so than the teabaggers at town hall meetings interrupting their congressmen. But it does put on full display the extend of the GOP meltdown. It's driving them insane.

Edited on Thu Sep-10-09 07:28 AM by Can of Whoop-ass
Gingrich was censured because Congress was handcuffed over the Clinton set up, by the adultering pedophile Newt and Newt was never re-elected.

Like Ollie North, Gingrich and FOX Noise thinks Americans have forgot.

Americans will never forgive republicans. Best bet for the GOP? Emmigrate and start your own Dixieland, with cotton field and slaves.

191. While pretty much everything above is true
the fact remains: he got his point across. Even though he apologized, and he may get some sort of censure, he made his point, and the President's remarks about universal healthcare not applying to those here illegally is one part of the speech that will be remembered. It may even have put a bright spotlight on verification procedures as the bill moves along through Congress.

Don't we wish that we had someone on our side saying, "You lie!" when Bushco took us to war over and over again? That's the point of the town hallers, they raise a ruckus, just like we used to do when the enemy was Nixon and the cause was Vietnam.

This is the body of the email that I sent to Rep. Wilson:

I watched the President's speech last night. Congratulations! You just embarrassed yourself, your party, your state, and your country before the entire world. Your outburst was unproductive, petty, and brings nothing to the table to achieve true health care reform. If you are unwilling or unable to provide positive input into the health care debate then you are in the wrong profession and not an asset to your state.

Your behavior toward the President of the United State was disgraceful. You should be made to stand up in the same body and make a public apology, not only for what you so inappropriately bellowed but to acknowledge the fact that your remark was totally erroneous, i.e.: a lie.
