Utah students react favorably to Obama's education speech

President Barack Obama delivered his much-debated speech to schoolchildren Tuesday, sticking to scripted talking points on the importance of education, personal responsibility, good study habits and hard work.

"I'm calling on each of you to set your own goals for your education...and to do everything you can to meet them," Obama said in a televised speech aired live at schools throughout the nation. "Every single one of you has something that you're good at. Every single one of you has something to offer."

Leading up to the controversial talk, parents and conservative groups voiced opposition to a perceived federal intrusion into local school affairs. Some questioned Obama's motives and feared he would use the time to push policy objectives.

Following the pushback, districts in Texas, Illinois, Minnesota, Missouri, Virginia and Wisconsin decided to not show the speech to students. Nebo School District in Utah followed suit, issuing a directive last week against televising the speech in class. Canyons School District wouldn't allow elementary schools to show it.

Clearly these students don't recognize Afro-Stalinism when they hear it.

2. This is what I'm looking for..postive feedback..
<snip>> from your article, Guy Whitey..

"Students who did watch, including 64 predominantly white AP history students at Alta High, say what resonated most was Obama's personal narrative of rising from underprivileged roots to the White House.

"I didn't know his Dad died," said 16-year-old Joseph Gibbons.

"My Dad died when I was young, too. It made him seem more real."

4. That, in a nut shell, is why they are so frantic. They can identify with
the scary black guy.

11. Yes, and think of all the future voters
who would benefit from the inspiring speech on education.

Better they should go with the FEAR BASE who have no plans.:scared::scared: Only lies and fear.

5. The President establishes positive rapport with the public.
No wonder the Pubbies are scared witless.

7. Interestingly enough, what President Obama said in that speech
Looked a lot like what President Gordon B. Hinckly (Recently deceased head of the Church) used to tell the youth of the Church in talks addressed to them.

The whole idea of working hard, developing one's talents and gaining an education have been continually hit upon as vitally important goals for Mormon youth for years.

8. I remember Hinkley
He was the one who got duped into handing over a fortune in LDS money by
that guy faking Joseph Smith papers in "The Mormon Murders." I doubt Obama
consciously took Hinkley's writings for inspiration, but it's not a theme
the Mormons own. I'm sure Utah Republicans are going nuts trying to figure
out if they should be cheering Obama for echoing Fearless Leader, or reviling
him just on general principle.

12. I don't think Obama was taking his cues from President Hinckley either.
But his words would resonate with Mormon youth in Utah because they are similar.

9. God forbid American students listen to a speech from the President of the United States of America.
Edited on Tue Sep-08-09 05:17 PM by LynnTheDem
After all, the office of the President of the United States of America is a totally meaningless empty hollow shell of a nothing and deserves no respect whatsoever.

Of course, that doesn't apply when the President of the United States of America happens to have a (R) behind their name. Then, of course, the office of the United States of America must be repsected and obeyed by every citizen; otherwise they are anti-American traitors.

10. You can't spell Mormon without "moron".
Sorry. I couldn't resist.
