Ottawa to send force to Haiti

By JEFF SALLOT and DARREN YOURK
Globe and Mail Update

The Canadian Forces will send a contingent of about 450 personnel to help restore stability to Haiti starting Sunday, Defence Minister David Pratt said Friday.

The group will include 160 infantry soldiers, a headquarters unit to supervise the mission of soldiers from Canada and other UN troop contributors, a logistical support unit and a helicopter detachment with four choppers.

Prime Minister Paul Martin approved the 90-day mission and deployment Thursday night and Mr. Pratt and the chief of defence staff, General Ray Henault, made the announcement in Halifax.

1. Oh God...
...Paul Martin is either kissing up to GW right now, or he plans to attack the marines there in Haiti and just get WW-III over with now.

Hey, wouldn't it be a hoot if the Canadians bring back Aristides and reinstall him to his former post as head of Haiti. There is oil on them thar' ocean banks, I'm telling you...:toast:

2. Canada to help ...!
Help the US and French watch Aristide supporters being hacked apart by drug dealers...

Funny thing is that Canada sent the RCMP to help train the Haitian police back in the 90s...but alas! those same police are NOW thugs and tyrants?

Now idiot Martin, seemingly clueless, is talking about how there needs to be a fundamental change to Haitian institutions...essentially the same shitty speech Cretin gave in 1995?

Good to see Patterson, the head of Jamaica and CARICOM, is doing the commonwealth proud calling for an investigation, good to see Cuba as a few offering humanitarian aid...unlike Martin.

160 bodyguards to the convicted killers and drug lords that overthrew the legit gov't...

Shame shame

4. You missed the point...
According to Washington, their media and their allies.. Aristide lead a thuggish regime, it's cops were death squad, judges corrupt etc etc.

Well, if true, then canada should be very very concerned as they lead the way training the the police and judiciary?

Certainly the 'rebels' sound bites indicate this...
One fellow was saying 'we need the army back, this aristide police are 'boys'...

The point I was making is that the Canadian gov't has essentially disavowed, without any explanation, their previous support for a democratically elected government and it's training and support programs and have apparantly, using the SAME rationale, have backed a illegal coup which accuses this previous government of tyranny?

If the coup is allowed to stand, as well as the accusations it is founded upon, then Canada must share some of the blame for not doing a proper job in the first place.

This should mean that Canada is the LAST country that should be involved in the reconstruction...

OR it was a US backed coup and the work Canada did was undone in a couple of weeks by drug dealers and the US State Department?

Again, if this is true, then Canada should have no part in this reconstruction...

In other words, Martin has miserably failled his first foreign policy test...
