Anger uncorked at bottle maker Sigg over BPA
Source: Associated Press

Now this shocker from Sigg Switzerland: Bottles made by the company before August 2008 had "trace amounts" of BPA in the epoxy liners. Sigg officials knew it since June 2006, but didn't announce it until last month.

Indignant Sigg owners like Farber have been blogging and tweeting up a tsunami. After all, the colorful bottles — which can sell for more than $20 — have serious green cred among the stylish and health conscious. Bottle designs include not only funky graphic patterns, pictures of Hello Kitty or skulls, but also slogans like "SIMPLY ECO LOGICAL."

"I did feel betrayed by a company that was putting itself out there as a green and safe company," said Farber, whose girls are now 2 and 4. "Why wasn't this disclosed earlier?"

Concerns about BPA stem from the fact that it can mimic estrogen, a powerful hormone. The Food and Drug Administration is reviewing its conclusion from last year that its use in baby bottles and food containers is safe for infants.

But while scientists disagree about whether the very low doses found in bottles can be harmful, consumers have become increasingly wary about BPA. The maker of plastic Nalgene water bottles last year pulled bottles with BPA from stores because of growing consumer concern.

I am unsure about the outrage of this situation being moreso on the issue of honesty or a real health threat. Earlier tests claimed that no BPA leached into the water of even age bottles, but the tests only accounted for levels above one part per billion. To be fair even Paperchase aluminum bottles leached around 13 ppb and I think Polycarbonates leached even more than that.

I have used one of those dark, glossy lined Sigg bottles for around six months, it has a small dent, it has been hand washed in hot water and has been left inside a hot car a few times and once I drank orange juice in it. I'm sure many other SIGG users have done this, does this mean we're going to die soon?

1. No, you won't die soon, but it's a serious betrayal of trust.
I'm sticking with stainless steel. Expensive, sure, but you only have to buy one/lifetime.

3. Broke?
I bought two stainless steel bottles for my wife because she stands a good chance of losing one. She's hard on things but I have a hard time imagining them breaking!

9. I don't knowingly buy things made in China.
So, Kleen Kanteen is not an option.

I would never have bought them if I knew. We make a conscious effort not to by Chinese products too. Thanks for letting me know.

7. Our Sigg's took some serious dents
It's too bad because they were pretty neat looking (the kids really like them) but now they're all dented up from being in their backpacks.

8. Kleen Kanteens are made in China.
Which raises its own set of safety concerns.

18. That wasn't always the case....
one of their big marketing items was that they were made in the USA. Then that suddenly stopped.

10. I have some BPA-free plastic bottles (nos. 2,4, or 5 plastics)
that I've found at rummage sales or resale shops. The FDA says these forms of plastic are safe, it keeps them from ending up in landfills, I'm not paying someone to manufacture products in China or other sweat-shop nations, they're wicked cheap, and they last forever.

I do not understand why people spend $20 or more for bottles made in China, when I've spent as little as $.25. Usually, it's around $1.00. I have four bottles that give me at least one to use when the others need washing, and there's plenty more where they came from.

1000 B, 1000 Calcium, 500 E,
and throw in some Gingko,
Vision Enhancer and Omega-multi.

Clean Hands, wash food, steam breathing (pot of water to boil)

Some exercise and not too much alcohol,

and we'll get past the swine.

16. I never liked my Sigg.
I bought one for myself and one each for my niece and nephew. The outside would be uncomfortably cold for their little hands but the water inside would not stay cold.

I recently bought CamelBaks based on the reviews. They are BPA-free and dishwasher safe. So far they are working out great. The kids can bite them like kids tend to do but the bite valve does not show the bite marks. They really like them. The only thing I don't like is that the bottles "sweat". The 0.5L is about the size of my Sigg and was half the cost.
