Reuters - A powerful earthquake rattled Indonesia's main island on Wednesday, seismology agencies said, shaking buildings in the capital and prompting warnings of local tsunamis along the Java coast.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.

The U.S. Geological Survey recorded the quake with a magnitude of 7.4 at a depth of 63 km (39 miles).

Indonesia's seismology agency put the magnitude at 7.3 with the epicentre 142 km (88 miles) southwest of Tasikamalaya in West Java, the Indonesian agency said.

"Mini Tsunami

There were reports that houses had collapsed in villages south of Bandung but there were no reports of any deaths, according to the Meteorology and Geophysics Agency technical chief Suharjono. However, he said a tsunami warning was soon withdrawn.

"There was a tsunami in the sea off Tasikmalaya but it was only 20cm high, it was insignificant," Suharjono added."

JAKARTA, Indonesia — A powerful earthquake struck the southern coast of Java on Wednesday, killing at least 32 people and rocking buildings 120 miles away in the capital, Jakarta, government officials said.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center of the National Weather Service said the 7.1 magnitude quake struck Java, Indonesia’s main island, at 2:55 p.m. local time. The center’s initial report, at 3:06 p.m., triggered a tsunami watch, although that was canceled 15 minutes later.

“No tsunami threat exists to coastlines in the Pacific,” the center’s official bulletin said. “However, earthquakes of this size sometimes generate local tsunamis that can be destructive along coasts located within a few hundred kilometers of the earthquake’s epicenter.”

The Health Ministry said it was sending medical teams to Tasikmalaya, the town nearest the epicenter, where several buildings were reported to have collapsed, Reuters reported.
