China admits organs removed from prisoners for transplants
Source: Daily Telegraph

Facing a growing demand for transplants, the Beijing government finally conceded that abuses had taken place after years of allegations that prisoners and even young conscripts in its army were targeted for their organs.

It announced a national plan to curb a rampant black market organ trade where a single kidney can sell for as much as £50,000.

Promising a major initiative to clean up China's murky organ donation business, the country's vice-minister for health, Huang Jiefu, said Death Row inmates were "definitely not a proper source for organ transplants".

Under Chinese law organs can only be taken from condemned prisoners if they give written consent, however the opaque nature of Chinese justice has drained confidence from the system which doctors admit is open to widespread abuse

1. dehumanizing, eviscerating humans we are!
looking at each other as organ doners is a slippery slope to looking at each other as food.

9. I'm sure there are freepers who'd like to do this here
"After all, they chose to commit a crime?" is the standard justification for any brutality committed against prisoners. I mean, prison rape is considered already humorous.

and in the libertarian version, the harvested organs would be sold on the "free market", offsetting the costs of incarceration.

I'm sure we will see a policy paper from the Heritage Institute on this any day now.

10. If its not already being done here
I'm sure its just a matter of time. I'm also sure it will be welcomed just like outsourcing, work visas, free trade agreements, for profit health care, and all the other charming practices that enable a very few to own almost everything including your liver.

11. Just excess components, those organs seemed too expensive in a "free market".

14. First thought- At least those Chinese organs were put to better
use than the organs that were 'removed' by Bush Bombs in Iraq and Afhganistan.
