U.S. parents angry after student caught at border with pot
From the article:
Parents at a meeting here accused British Columbia of having lax drug laws after a teenager was arrested for allegedly transporting 8 pounds of marijuana across the border on her school bus.

A U.S. prosecutor said earlier in the week that the pot found on the 16-year-old girl's school bus appeared to be from British Columbia.

...................

The small community of Point Roberts is located on a peninsula extending south from the Canadian mainland. That means students must ride a bus across the Canada-U.S. border to get to school in Blaine.

The girl was on her way to school Feb. 20 when about eight pounds of pot worth at least $25,000 was found in her backpack at the border, authorities said. Verge said earlier that she told police she was supposed to get paid $300 to carry the marijuana for someone else and had done so three times before she got caught.

After all, wouldn't she be better off in Iraq getting her head blown off in a couple of years? The neo-fascists do not want to waste their precious war-children. In a couple of years she could be storming the city of Tehran, or some such other "productive" pursuit.

Okay, I understand parents getting upset. But this Tom Ridge thing is such a colossal boondoggle for the neo-fascist elite, it is disgusting.

Legalize the stuff and start dealing with some real problems for a change.

1. Amen! Legalize NOW!
All drugs, every single one of them. Empty the prisons of nonviolent drug offenders ASAP.. Stop destroying peoples lives based on their personal life decisions - that the government shouldn't be allowed into anyway. This whole war on drugs got us started on a slippery slope by demolishing the 4th amendment. Prohibition is futile and only wrecks lives.

3. so it's BC's fault, then ...
They hate us for our freedoms?

Actually, Point Roberts, being what political geographers call an "exclave", is STILL in the US. So unless there were people running alongside the bus while it passed through Canada, tossing cannabis through the windows ... this is a US issue, involving Americans.

Sorry parents, but if you don't like living next to Canada, there are dozens of other states that aren't adjacent to the border!

5. I agree.....They can always move to Texas.
Trying to blame this on the government of BC or Canada is kind of silly.

7. Uneconomical to legalize now.

There are far too many people and corporations making huge profits on the "drug war". Too many important CEOs making bonuses off the illegal substance prohibution.

Anytime you want to know the 'why' of anything, just follow the money. How many billions do we spend every year on this boondogle? Well, here's an idea, bring the 'war on drugs' to a screeching halt, and spend all those billions on a national health care plan, and include drig treatment. That would sold the drug 'problem'.

11. possible 30 day sentence.
I was relieved to read the worst she could get would be 30 days and not the 30 years I expected.

I've been interested myself in checking out Point Roberts as a place to retire to. Its dirt cheap, really nice real estate and 70% democratic.
