Annan making official visit to Canada next week

UNITED NATIONS — Secretary-General Kofi Annan will make an official visit to Canada next week and will meet top government officials as well as the newly appointed UN high commissioner for human rights, a UN spokesman said Thursday.

Annan and his wife, Nane, will fly to Ottawa on Monday and hold talks with Prime Minister Paul Martin, members of his cabinet, and Governor General Adrienne Clarkson. He will also address the joint houses of Parliament.

"Canada has strongly supported the United Nations throughout the nearly six decades since its founding. For many Canadians, the UN is the locus of international cooperation and common humanity -- where the world meets as one.

During his stay, Annan will also meet Louise Arbour, the former chief war crimes prosecutor appointed to the top UN human rights post last month. She will take up the new job when she leaves the Canadian Supreme Court in June.
