Officials See Rise In Militia Groups Across US
Source: Associated Press

(08-11) 21:09 PDT WASHINGTON (AP) --

Militia groups with gripes against the government are regrouping across the country and could grow rapidly, according to an organization that tracks such trends.

The stress of a poor economy and a liberal administration led by a black president are among the causes for the recent rise, the report from the Southern Poverty Law Center says. Conspiracy theories about a secret Mexican plan to reclaim the Southwest are also growing amid the public debate about illegal immigration.

Bart McEntire, a special agent with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, told SPLC researchers that this is the most growth he's seen in more than a decade.

"All it's lacking is a spark," McEntire said in the report.

It's reminiscent of what was seen in the 1990s — right-wing militias, people ideologically against paying taxes and so-called "sovereign citizens" are popping up in large numbers, according to the report to be released Wednesday. The SPLC is a nonprofit civil rights group that, among other activities, investigates hate groups.

Last October, someone from the Ohio Militia posted a recruiting video on YouTube, billed as a "wake-up call" for America. It's been viewed more than 60,000 times.

38. ok,
9.980 mhz - this is Pastor Peter J. Peters in LaPortte, Co. This is a white separatist church. this is by far the scariest of the bunch and unfortunately he is on 24 hours of the day with a 2 megawatt transmitter. I know they do a frequency change around 7pm CST.

anything that WWCR carries is going to be pretty whack. their transmitter schedule can be found here: http://www.wwcr.com/transmitter-sched.html

I'm at work right now so once i get home i can give you more information.

BTW, who besides Radio Shack gearheads listens to shortwave anyway? Wingnuts?

I remember a bunch of weird broadcasters in the 7.4 to 7.5 MHz frequency range some years ago. And are the scofflaws still talking to each other with unlicensed high-power SSB rigs above the CB band, just under 28 MHz?

drag out between a militia group and the government they wouldn't be averse to taking other people's sovereign lives, houses, and vehicles.

Stupid little people playing at war because the bigger the enemy the more meaning their pathetic sovereign lives have. They can't BE themselves. They define themselves as AGAINST this or that, they are defined by what they are not, and ironically that is not real identity.

Pretty lame - I have not ever once in my life seen or heard of a militia that was NOT crackpot boopdeeboop nuts.

I haven't heard them in a long long time on the upper part of 27 Mhz. I think it's because of the sun spot cycle because 10 meter amateur has been pretty dead for a while, with exception of greyline skip in the early morning, early dusk.

The true Pirate operators on shortwave hang out anywhere from 6.995 all the way down to 6.800. These guys put on some TRULY funny stuff and killer music.

WBCQ, The Planet, hangs out on 7.415 and 5.110. This station is out of Monticello, Maine and it's run by Alan Wiener, a radio pirate from long ago. He does sell airtime to a few of the religious crazies, but he puts on some great programming during the weekends.

If memory serves me correct TBN and Focus on the Family used to hang out in the middle of the 7mhz band years ago. My amateur transmitter in my van also serves as a dandy Shortwave rig and i usually tune into the Voice of America, or Radio Australia for the drive into work. You can get some decent news that way.

53. As I am only familiar with the FCC laws governing transmitter power
for FM (thanks to volunteering at a Pacifica station for years) how is it that a shortwave station can have a broadcast power of two megawatts?! I understand there are likely different standards between the two spectrums of radio broadcast, but I had always thought that 100,000 watts was the upper limit for all radio stations, no matter what spectrum they broadcast in.

Oh, and I'd love to have a shortwave receiver again. I love finding pirate stations. I'd also love to hear some of the "culture jamming" The Weatherman of negativland does :D

50. I've seen some neo-Nazi vids with over 2 million views. The militias are the "moderates."

For a single militia, 60,000 seems like a lot to me. However the main reason why we're seeing unrest is because the radicals don't have the numbers. The interests coordinating them know they don't have the votes, so they are going for bullying, lying and intimidation.

But it has to bother them to know they don't have the votes.

It isn't funny, but I am thinking that the only terrorism we'll see in the next eight years will be from domestic right wingers.

It is funny how quiet these groups get with a white Republican in the White House, no matter how much he screws over liberties or fucks up.

Edited on Wed Aug-12-09 07:50 AM by formercia
What the organizer didn't know was that his next door neighbor was the head of the counter-terrorism unit at DOJ. He was a friend of several years, so I got an invite to watch, along with a bunch of FBI, State Police and other agencies.
They put on a good show for us, including armed mock charges, cross burning and other antics.

The only casualties was when a tree house, holding a bunch of FBI, collapsed. Nothing serious.

14. Hope they stay put. Let them go crazy and kill themselves.
Most of these people are totally useless to society...never a constructive idea. They just go crazy with their poor-ass selves thinking that someone else might be helped. They are some of the most selfish, hateful folks in the world and quite a few of them just arrived on a boat themselves over the past 20 years...coming from white supremiscist nations that not long ago most white Americans decried. Racism, ignorance, and hate is a lethal combination that usually destroys the hater. These people can't even sleep at night since Obama won the Presidency.

16. I'm going to disagree.
Color may very well be part of it, but I think it's more a result of Gingrich's contract on America, manipulation to make the GOP answerable to no one, and the talking head's hatred of democrats.

Clinton was white. He pulled himself up by his bootstraps which is what they always say is their ideal and yet at that time they hated him more than anyone else I had ever seen up to that time.

On reading again, you sort of went a little overboard yourself, didn't you?

17. Once again, AP shows itself to be a disgrace.
A liberal administration led by a "black president" is NOT among the causes for the rise in militia activity. It is hatred toward liberalism and black people that is among the causes.

Is this just your typical, everyday AP carelessness? I suspect it is an example of something worse.

19. +1 For eight years, the US government was just great.
They were especially fond of their President. He was probably the worst we've ever had but he was white, stupid, and he had an R at the end of his name. That made him a Patriot. Isn't it ironic that they pretend that they're being persecuted by Homeland Security? Those stupid fucks condoned the creation of it! Now all of a sudden, the entire government is evil and needs to be overthrown.

It shows just how far out onto the right wing fringe US politics has gone when they become this hysterical just because the other party is in power. Sure, the fact that the President is black is a big part of it but we'd still be seeing a lot of this carrying on if he was white.

They don't think anyone to the left of Dick Cheney should be able to make any decisions in our government.

These nuts only agree with Paul or 2 or 3 primary issues. I suspect that Ron Paul would denounce people like this because there is little doubt but what racism is a driving force for them. In fact, Paul is strangely silent when he needs to be speaking up or does he want such trash inside his tent?

A Democrat gets elected, even if the Democrat is a classic conservative like Bill Clinton, and they get their guns and prepare to fight the next Revolutionary War.

But the Rhetoric is much louder this time. Where you have a lot of revolutionary smoke there will always be a couple of fires willing to kill people for their beliefs.

The Republican/Conservative movement has been taken over by the John Birch Society.
