Police: Man arrested before Obama event had loaded gun
Source: sea coastonline

PORTSMOUTH — Police said a man arrested at the scene of President Barack Obama's visit to the city Tuesday was found to be in possession of an unlicensed loaded gun.

Richard Terry Young, 62, of 821 Ocean Blvd. in Hampton, was arrested around 9:40 a.m., hours before Obama's arrival, and charged with the misdemeanor crimes of criminal trespass and carrying a loaded pistol without a license.

Young was found inside Portsmouth High School, where Obama later in the day held his town hall-style forum. Young was detained by the Secret Service and subsequently arrested by Portsmouth Lt. Corey MacDonald. Young was carrying a pocket knife, police said. A subsequent search of his vehicle, parked on school property, revealed a loaded hand gun, police said.

Police said Young is being investigated by the Secret Service for possible federal crimes resulting from the same series of events.

Bail was not immediately set, and Young was in the custody of Portsmouth police on Tuesday night.

we then don't have to debate them. But it won't help us get to the bottom of the issue or get ride of them.

51. "Racism excuse?" "Crying racism?" That won't help us get to the bottom of the issue?
First, racism is part of the Republican strategy against Democrats and has been for decades. Second, racism is very real today and Obama is a cynosure for the current crop of racists.

This is not about people not wanting to be able to afford the pediatrician. It is not about the budget deficit, which seemed to bother only Democrats until Bush left office. It is not about the trillions Bush spent on wars and on fighting terra. It is not about Bush's bailout. It is not about thirty years of Republicans and triangulating Democrats that left the country in desperate need of an immediate stimulus.

If this were about any of those things, people would be putting the blame where it belongs, not on Democrats and on their African American President. And Glen Beck would not be bloviating about how a man abandoned by his ne'er do well African father and raised by his white mom and white grandparents hates white people.

If you ever do get to the bottom of the issue, you will find racism there. And divisiveness and partisanship. That's all that's there.

63. Thank you for saying this ~ many Presidents have not been African American
and they have had many probems in this area.

It's not about him being Black that is not an excuse -- Reagan wasn't Black,Gerald Ford wasn't Black and so on.

It is the lack of power and the insane having feelings of no power at all.

What they don't understand is -- they would never get power because they don't have the connections and wealth.

6. OK, if he really wanted to kill someone
why did he leave the weapon in the car? And a pocketknife? That's part of the ordinary pocket contents of many people in our country. I'm sure hundreds a day get tossed into the trash at airport checkpoints by people who just forgot they were carrying them.

If he violated NH gun laws, then he needs to be charged accordingly. But the calculation that gun owner=racist murderer is the automatic conclusion that many here seem to jump to, and that's not necessarily the case here.

guns and ammunition when they are unattended is one thing. A guy with no permit who brings a loaded gun to a Presidential town hall on school property is another thing entirely. Now, it still may be an unfair leap from that to racism, but let's not pretend this is about a lawful gun owner behaving reasonably. That is very unfair to lawful, careful gun owners.

they always seem like someone who just does not fit in well with society in general.
There is always something very odd about them. Sort of a strange loner vibe.

For example, he mentioned that he voted for Ron Paul in the Presidential election. Every single individual I have spoken to who voted for Paul has given me the same oddball vibe, whether guns entered into the conversation, or not. There is something not quite right about these people.

Just my opinion.

My state gets a shitload of well-deserved grief, but they got it right on this one.

It is expressly stated that openly carrying a firearm is a method of intimidation, meant to cause alarm, and is ILLEGAL.

That's right, Texas.

11. In Wisconsin our Attorney General has incouraged the citizens
in this state to exercise their right to carry a loaded gun.

Milwaukee's police chief said he'll go on telling his officers to take down anyone with a firearm despite Van Hollen's finding that people can carry guns openly if they do it peacefully.

Chief Ed Flynn said officers can't assume people are carrying guns legally in a city that has seen nearly 200 homicides in the past two years.

He said that means officers seeing anybody carrying a gun will put them on the ground, take the gun away and then decide if the person has a right to carry it. ...http://artfularticulations.blogspot.com/2009/04/more-on-open-carry-in-wisconsin.html

61. How would you determine if an armed person has a right to be armed?
Edited on Fri Aug-14-09 06:22 AM by No Elephants
Or, are you implying gun laws should not be enforced? Cause usually, the riff from extremist gun enthusiasts on message boards is "Enforce the laws that are on the books now before you enact any new ones."

To enforce the laws that are on the books now, you need to find out if an armed person has a right to be armed. Which brings me back to my original question. How would you determine, safely and beyond any doubt, if an armed person has a right to be armed?

16. NH gun laws....
I can't speak to what he did or didn't plan to do, but there's no such thing as an "unregistered gun" in NH.
There's no gun registration in NH, open carry is legal, and concealed carry requires a permit (as long as you meet minimum Federal requirements i.e no felony convictions, among others). I don't know what they'd charge him with, though bringing a gun to this event could be considered unwise, but there's got to be more to the story than some guy having a gun in his car. Carrying a gun here is alot more common here than you'd think. NH rated safest state in the country in 2008, there's a reason for it.

55. Poorly worded law. Why should you be able to carry or own any pistol or revolver,
loaded or unloaded, concealed or in plain sight, without a permit? According to this law, you can carry a loaded gun for which you have no permit, into a school or a court or a hospital, etc. as long as the gun is in plain sight. Bizarre.

36. The article is poorly worded. It was the fact that HE wasn't licensed, not the gun.
They did use the term "unlicensed gun", not "unregistered gun" - but what they should have said is that he was not licensed to carry a loaded weapon in his car.

Also, it was on school grounds and you can't bring a gun within 1000ft of school property unless it is unloaded and locked up.

So he was violating at least a couple of New Hampshire's gun laws.
