Finance chief expects job cuts in (Nashville) Metro

Metro would have to eliminate 1,400 jobs to achieve the 15% budget cuts Mayor Bill Purcell has asked all departments to consider for next year, the latest report from the city's finance department shows.

Finance Director David Manning said the mayor's budget won't recommend that many cuts when it is presented in late May. But some cuts will be necessary among the approximately 10,500 Metro general government employees, he said.

The report reflects the cuts department heads would have to make under the administration's 10% and 15% reduction scenarios. Some of the departments with the most positions on the block are Police, Fire, Parks and Codes — although the report does not give job cuts in terms of percentages. These are among some of the largest departments in Metro.
