'80s teen flick director John Hughes dies in NYC

NEW YORK – A spokeswoman for John Hughes says the director of 1980s coming-of-age films like "Sixteen Candles" and "The Breakfast Club" has died in Manhattan.

Michelle Bega says the 59-year-old Hughes died of a heart attack during a morning walk. He was in Manhattan to visit family.

He made a teen star of Molly Ringwald with 1984's "Sixteen Candles" about a girl's nightmarish birthday on the eve of her sister's wedding.

Hughes also directed "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" and wrote "Home Alone." He lived in Illinois and set many of his films in the Chicago area.

John Hughes has died of a heart attack.

Hughes suffered the heart attack while taking a morning walk during a trip to NYC to visit family.

He directed such '80s hit films as "The Breakfast Club," "Pretty in Pink," "Sixteen Candles" and "Ferris Bueller's Day Off."

He was 59.

All things considered, however, he was a good craftsman who got some very good performances from actors in movies that could have been utter flops with a less-talented director.

38. I was in high school in the 80s

and I grew up in suburban Chicago where the John Hughes movies took place. These movies were a part of my DNA in the 80's. John Hughes got me into the Smiths, New Order, Echo And The Bunnymen, The Psychedelic Furs, The Killing Joke and Nik Kershaw. Bands and artists that influenced me as a musician which is how I make my living today. If it weren't for those movies it is quite possible I might be doing something else with my life as an adult. He was the same age as my dad when he died last year of a heartattack. It makes me so sad.
