13. Twitter goes titsup
Source: The Register

Twitter was knocked offline on Thursday after the site became the victim of a denial of service attack.Users of the micro-blogging service are used to seeing the fail whale, a graphic that appears when service is over capacity, but this time around the site was left completely unreachable from around 1500 on Thursday (UK time).A terse messages on Twitter's status blog initially said the site was down before adding "We are defending against a denial-of-service attack, and will update status again shortly".

Don't know the source of the attack.I am not a twit, so this has not affected me personally. It is a reminder to all those who were lauding the ability of twitter traffic to persist in Iran in the face of the lockdown of other networks. This must be causing incredible problems for the "new" CNN with its obsession with twitter. I would guess they must be talking about the problems with twitter, not reading all the messages they are getting!

22. Definition:
Tits up, like toes up, deceased, pinin' for the fjords. It is an ex-Twitter. The real delight here is that a "Tit" is also a kind of bird.

23. We also have tits/titmice here in NC
Edited on Thu Aug-06-09 12:26 PM by unc70
Locally in NC, we have "tufted tits" (AKA "tufted titmouse").

The term "titsup" is used for the bankrupt/failure meaning like "bellyup", but in the more-general sense as in this headline.

BTW I recommend The Register (UK version) as a good site for an early headsup on technology and other news. Like DU, it covers a lot of topics outside its primary focus and often the most-interesting info is down in the comments. http://www.theregister.co.uk

18. Twitter is back up
and some information is still getting out of Iran. Individual sites of Iranian posters are blocked.

I have a sneaking suspicion this is government mischief because Twitter isn't the only site attacked. Other sites providing news out of Iran like Gooya are also down. The FB pages of opposition leaders were hacked or blocked.

I hope the code kiddies retaliate against that government. They were effective 6 weeks ago.

But seriously, coordinated DOS attacks are illegal. I hope the perps get caught. Who knows what they may decide to disrupt next?
