7. Can you say chattels?
Let's be real. It's all about dowries and heirs. Those born outside the wedlock are illegitimate. and have no legal rights to property or entitlements. The legally wed have rights to the property, Social Security (if it lasts), health care, and visitation/custody rights. It has nothing to do with love, faith, and family values whether you are a male-male female-male or male-female union under the law.

He is distracting the point of view the same way his father did when he started the debate about flag burning on the 4th of July. He passed some thwarting legislation that week...no one ever noticed because they were cutting flags and putting them on blue jeans to be rebellious which was the same as Rosie and her long time "Domestic Partner" flying to CA to get married.

The only thing that we have to worry about is getting rid of Bush and Company. We must change the debate and we will win the election on matters that count such as; how the eroding middle class can survive poverty without jobs and dignity in the third world economy Bush created for the United States????

9. I don't know why you directed your repsonse to me...
and whom you were referring to as chattel, but here goes:

I would never argue that historically marriage has largely been concerned with the accumulation and perservation of family wealth, especially as it has been framed within the context of the law.

However, there are some other factors that need to be considered when having a dialogue about gay marriage. Firstly, though gay couples certainly want and are absolutely entitled to the economic advantages of marriages (insurance coverage, for example) this is a civil rights issue, not an economic one. So in one sense, you're right: the debate DOES need to be changed. It needs to be framed as a equal protection issue as opposed to a morality issue. Our side must reclaim the language.

Secondly, for the majority of US citizens, marriage has evolved from merely a way to pass on wealth to an institution which symbolizes love and partnership as well as financial security. I honestly believe taking teh moral question out by making all marriages civil unions is the best answer, but many people are very emotional about this and insist upon a dialogue of morality and family values. So it is extremely difficult to dismiss those sentiments.

For the record, I'm sick of people categorizing this as a "fringe" issue, one that Bush has put out there (which I admit he may have, but I feel his worm is turning on this) to "distract" us from the "real" issues. Civil rights are the center of what it means to be American. How owuld you feel if I characterized "your" (hypothetical) issues, for example, the economy, as "fringe": "Who cares about the economy, the poor's rights to a decent quality of life are just a fringe issue". Just because a position is deemed as "unpopular" doesn't mean it's not worth fighting for. This is tantamount to saying screw our standards, let's pander to votes. I think we can take a stance on gay marriage/union and still beat Bush.

upon her death. At least you were TREATED like her family when she died. At least you could ask for life saving measures or request to take her off life support if it were only making things worse. At least people treated you like a widower after 27 years.

Most of my gay friends have been together as long as you, if not longer...and when their partner dies, but for their friends, society will treat it as though they lost a roommate.

At least when your wife died you were treated like a fucking grieving human being...it's a shame all that humanity has not made a difference in how you treat and relate to others.

The cartoon caricatures of Bush are growing increasingly more demented and demonic.

It would be interested to compare how some cartoonists started to draw him with their depictions of him now.

12. Yes...the true Chimp emerges
Steve Bell always had the most derogatory depictions of Bush the Blowhard Chimp but as we head towards campaign time the depictions are becoming a tad less reverent. But Bell is the best. His Iraq cartoons are outrageously good and so refreshing at the time.

10. It's always about THEM
Edited on Fri Mar-05-04 12:10 AM by rocknation
The Christian right had little more than a week to savour its victory--President George Bush's decision to change the constitution to bar same-sex couples from matrimony--before encountering grassroots rebellion.

"Grassroots rebellion?" Now, there's a phrase I haven't seen in a while. But this paragraph really crystallizes the essence of the Bush regime. It's always about THEM--and we grassroots types don't exist, never mind don't count, until it's time to go to the polls. Theirs is not to do our bidding or even hear our concerns; theirs is do whatever the heck they feel like and demand that we feel like it, too. But their script didn't pan out this time.

The gays rebelled, not surprising in itself. But they were aided and abetted by some courageous politicans, some competent judges, and most shocking of all, support from the straight community. They weren't expecting that, especially in the shadow of The Passion movie. Same thing with Bush's 9/11 campaign: They tried to make it look like the only people complaining were the 9/11 families, but a CNN poll showed disapproval of the ad prevailed by a 2 to 1 margin.

The lanterns are in the church tower; the tea is in the harbor. Keep bringing it on, Bush--we love hearing from you.

13. The Masters Of Misdirection
bu$h's handlers (and prolly the Boy King his ownself) don't give Shit One about the furor (fuhrer-or?) over gay marriage and/or gay rights. The sudden emphasis on this issue is a diversion, pure and simple.

Outside of abortion and guns, can you think of any subject that would be more controversial, generate more water cooler chatter and keep Americans from actually LOOKING at what the Regime is doing to this country than (lord, deliver us!!!)

GAY MARRIAGE?

Tennesse Williams nailed it all those years ago: "Deception, deception, deception."

Machiavelli is doing his happy dance in Hell; his boys Rove and Cheney are Apt Pupils.
