"U.S. drone" hits a family home of Pakistan Taliban chief
Source: Reuters

Wed Aug 5, 2009 1:33am EDT

PESHAWAR, Pakistan (Reuters) - A missile believed to have been fired by a U.S. drone struck the house of Pakistani Taliban chief Baitullah Mehsud's father-in-law Wednesday, killing at least one woman and two militants, a security official and a relative said.

U.S. missile attacks on Mehsud territory in the South Waziristan tribal region have become more frequent in the past month and Pakistan has also bombarded the militant stronghold with air raids and medium range artillery.

Mehsud's whereabouts were not known at the time the time of the attack, which occurred shortly before 1.00 a.m. (1900 GMT Tuesday) on the house near Makeen, a remote village in the heart of the Mehsud tribal lands.

A security official in the region told Reuters that two militants were killed in the attack. He spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity concerning intelligence matters.

8. Don't be a fucking idiot--because that statement WAS idiotic.
:wtf: indeed.

You couldn't possibly be more offensive if you farted loudly at a funeral.

Way to create a strawman and get faux-poutraged about it in one brief sentence.

Why don't you try reading up on what's going on in the region before you mouth off like that? It wasn't a sheepherder's house that was hit, now, was it?

Unsatisfactory. FAIL.

Another ‘blasphemy’ case

LAHORE: An angry mob attacked the house of a 60-year-old woman in Sanghar district in Sindh in another alleged incident of desecration of the holy Quran, a private TV channel reported late on Wednesday. Following the attack, the police shifted the woman, Akhtari Malkani, to the police station from a katchi abadi area in the district. The District Bar Association officials assured the mob that a case would be registered against the woman if she was found guilty. Despite assurance from the lawyers and police, the people demanded that the woman should be handed over to them and pelted stones at the police station building and burned tyres on road. daily times monitor

A roadside bomb struck a tractor carrying people to a wedding in southern Afghanistan, killing 21 civilians in one of the deadliest strikes in weeks, Afghan officials said on Thursday.

"A trailer being towed by a tractor was hit by a roadside bomb... and killed 21 civilians and wounded six others," Afghan General Shir Mohammad Zazai said.

Second attack

A separate roadside bomb exploded next to a police vehicle on Thursday in another part of Helmand province, the Nad Ali district, killing five policemen and wounding three others, the Interior Ministry said in a statement.

Last month U.S. and British forces launched simultaneous major operations in Helmand province, and they are still fighting to secure areas previously held by Taliban insurgents.

4. They are drawing Pakistani Taliban chief Baitullah Mehsud out...

... in hopes of getting him to stick his neck out in rage over this hit (that is if it was a Predator hit, and not just a bomb factory boo boo) so they can nab or dirt nap him one way or another. The elections in Afghanistan are coming up soon, getting this one out of the way would be a big help.

14. The only one who is projecting "happiness" here is YOU.
You're the one crafting scenarios and projecting "feelings" on others. YOU lit it off--no one else.

I'd like to reduce, and preferably eliminate, casualties in southwest asia. This will not be accomplished by finger wagging.

You have to get the people doing the killing, and let their friends who remain understand that if they keep that shit up, they're next.

There's the slightest flaw to your (what passes for) reasoning, and that is as follows: YOU ARE THE PEOPLE ARE DOING THE KILLING. By your own (once again, what passes for-) logic, you once again have made Team You(-SA) the soft chewy centre of your own bull's-eye.

28. Yeah, right. Grow up. Why do you? Shopping the same, tired lies, too.
If the Taliban put down their weapons and stopped RPGing coalition forces, no one would be going after them.

That's the "slight" flaw in your argument.

Who lit this shit off, amigo? It was a tall fellah with a kidney problem...that's why we're over there.

Why the fuck are you on this board, if you hate USA so much? Are you confusing PROGRESSIVE with "America hating?"

20. Look, if you don't understand the culture, and even very recent history
then just don't bother to try to be snarky. No one said shit about "validity"--but it happens in every conflict in that end of the world. Hostage taking is also common. These are time-honored traditions that date back centuries.

You don't understand, either, that someone dying is nothing more than the Will of God, and the next life is regarded as "way better" than this shitty hard one on earth. Westerners who have this overly-sentimental attachment to life, particularly when it comes down to their own combatants, are viewed as wussy and foolish and weak.

The values are not the same. That's why these bastards have NO trouble at all surrounding themselves with women and children, while they're planning battles, making bombs or suicide vests, shooting off RPGs, you name it-- and then using the corpses when they are shut down to tug on the heartstrings of those who don't get that war is a family affair.

I find it tiresome when people pretend that the obvious is news to them.

How soon they forget: http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2002/dec/01/iraq2

26. That last article is especially interesting. I hope people take the time to read it...
.....Three of the boys appeared to be younger than 10 and were visibly traumatized, occasionally breaking down in tears. The others were mostly in their mid-teens. Of the six who spoke to the AP, most said they were made to clean dishes or undergo rigorous physical training. None said he had been trained to carry out a suicide attack.

Feriha Peracha, a clinical neuropsychologist called in by the army to assess the boys, said some of them were clearly depressed and traumatized. However, she said it was unlikely all had been kidnapped as they claimed.

"It's only one or two maximum out of this group that I would say was probably actually taken by force," Peracha said.

The Taliban have been known to persuade boys to join their ranks or even paid impoverished families to hand over a young future fighter, Khan said.

"They are like the Mafia. Some children are inspired by them. They command respect because people are afraid of them," he said.

......I.H., who said he's 12 but looks much younger, said he was snatched off the streets and driven to a training camp.

"We were just playing" in the village when a car drove up, he said. "They blindfolded us."

B.K., a 15-year-old from Mingora, said he was lured into a car.

"They took me to a mountain place that was a training center" where he and other boys were woken before dawn for prayers, followed by strenuous physical exercise, he said.
