Two more US soldiers killed in grenade attack

TWO US soldiers died in Iraq yesterday in a continuing upsurge of violence that has brought the number of American deaths to 50 since George Bush declared an end to major combat on May 1.

The US military said one soldier was killed and three were injured, one seriously, in a grenade attack in the centre of Baghdad.

A second soldier died in a traffic accident south of the capital.

In all, 165 US soldiers have died in combat in Iraq, 18 more than were killed in the 1991 Gulf War.

I'm assuming by the date on this article that is is LBN. Is this old news or are U.S. troop deaths so routine they don't merit mention in the U.S. media any more?

1. on NPR's Morning Edition yesterday
one reporter mentioned that there were often too many attacks against U.S. troops than could be reported. Either the official story of these attacks would take a long time to "filter down" or the system by which these events are disseminated is overwhelmed by the information glut.

Suffice to say: we, the consumers of information, here in the U.S. receive only a slim view of the dire circumstances being suffered by soldiers as a result of this invasion.

2. Looks like the media is slipping back into whitewash mode.
For no other reason than daily U.S. deaths have become "tiresome".

3. Even the British press now ignores the deaths
of men and women in Iraq who died in accidents, by friendly fire, and suicide. They don't even use the qualifier any more, they just report the lower, misleading number.

"...has brought the number of American deaths to 50 since George Bush declared an end to major combat on May 1."

The number of dead Americans since May 1 is twice that, but the press is ignoring their sacrifice because they weren't killed directly by Iraqis.

5. When you include the wounded our casualties are thousands.
According to a report I heard on NPR more than 4000.

6. Grim, but the military hospitals are still full.
Especially the "Last Thursday, 140 patients arrived at the hospital from Operation Iraqi Freedom" shocked me.
