Senate Mulls Move Against Job Flight
WASHINGTON -- Senators are weighing whether to block federal contractors from using tax dollars to move American jobs to a foreign shore, a response to increasing angst over job losses in manufacturing and service work.

Sen. Chris Dodd, D-Conn., wants to prohibit offshore work in cases where the government privatizes government jobs, the federal government contracts for goods and services, and state governments contract work using federal funds.

"Federal dollars ought to be used to pay American workers," he said.

Dodd moved Wednesday to attach the prohibition to a corporate tax break under consideration in the Senate. Republicans asked for more time to study the idea and propose changes.

2. Why do they even have to think about this?
Of course taxpayer dollars shouldn't be used to move US jobs overseas!
How can there be any question on that issue. Using tax payer money to screw American workers and hurt the country as a whole is outrageous.

The names of these Republican/Corporate Senators who need time to think about it and study the issue needs to splashed across every form of media possible. If the corporate media won't do, the Democratic Party will have to do it.

Also we need to highlight that the Bush* Administration's response to off-shoring is "let them make hamburgers".

14. Oops, you said 'common sense.'
Not much of that in the GOP. Just money and big corporations.

3. Offshoring Once Removed
Contractors will get around the law by using subcontractors with significant overseas operations. That way, they won't have to report on their OWN personnel. This might be called "offshoring once removed". it's still offshoring, but the books are clean.

5. this should fall into the "Well Duh" category
but I think we need to go a step further and quit paying subsidies to corporations entirely.

I am tired of bailing out airlines so that they can lay-off workers, tired of paying for "homeland security" so that they can layoff first responders, etc.

I am tired of our government giving multi-billion dollar no-bid contracts to cronies.

In other words, I am tired of this mal-administration's policies and procedured to destroy the very fabric of our society.

Are you better off than you were 4 years ago?

8. Priorities, remember
First congress has to "mull over" amending the Constitution to prevent gay marriage, then they have to "mull over" whether or not Howard Stern is a bad guy, they they have to "mull over" whether or not Janet Jackson's boob is going to cause the downfall of the republic. You know -- the important stuff that we overpay them so handsomely to mull over! :eyes:

9. "a response to increasing angst over job losses in manufacturing ..."
The German word Angst when used in English usually implies a psychological problem, doesn't it??

Cunning use of language to disparage those concerned about US firms sending US jobs to foreign countries, right?

12. How about states that outsource their social-work call centers
You have to call another country to discuss your unemployment or Medicaid benefits. How pathetic The state can create a job for someone on another continent but won't do it at home because they would have to pay more for the service.
