Four Killed as Helicopter Crashes Onto I-70 in Western Md.

A commercial helicopter crashed onto Interstate 70 just west of Frederick County late Thursday night, killing all four people on board, said Washington County emergency services director Kevin Lewis.

The accident at about 10:30 p.m. forced authorities to shut down the highway several miles east of Hagerstown, on the eastern edge of Washington County. Police said the closure could continue until early Friday.

No vehicles were on the interstate when the aircraft crashed, according to the Associated Press.

Troopers diverted traffic from the interstate for miles around the accident. Eastbound traffic is being detoured at U.S. 40 (exit 42) and westbound traffic is being diverted at Md. Route 17 (exit 42).
