First Bush Ads Focus on 9/11, 'Steady Leadership'

First Bush Ads Focus on 9/11, 'Steady Leadership'

By Steve Holland WASHINGTON (Reuters) - <snip>

One ad, entitled "Tested," shows, among other images, a damaged building from the World Trade Center ruins behind an American flag..."The last few years have tested America in many ways," the voice-over says. "Some challenges we've seen before. And some were like no others. But America rose to the challenge."...It concludes: "President Bush. Steady leadership in times of change."

An ad called "Safer, Stronger," points to the problems the United States has faced since Bush took office in January 2001, a recession, a declining stock market, a dot.com boom gone bust and "a day of tragedy." ..."Today, America is turning the corner. Rising to the challenge," the ad says. This one is also done in Spanish. <snip>

A 60-second ad entitled "Lead" focuses on what may well be Bush's greatest weakness, the inability of the U.S. economy to generate a lot of jobs despite strong growth. ..."And as the economy grows, the job base grows and somebody who's looking for work will be more likely to find a job," Bush says in the ad.
<snip>

"These ads are expected to reference Bush's 'steady leadership' as president, but they would be remiss to leave out some 'steady' facts when it comes to his leadership: a steady loss of jobs, a steady increase in uninsured Americans, a steady decline in education funding, a steady erosion of veterans' benefits, a steady attack against the Social Security Fund, and a steady rise of the deficit," he (Terry) said.

Bush Re-Election Ads Focus on Past 3 Years

By LIZ SIDOTI Associated Press Writer

ARLINGTON, Va. (AP) -- <snip>"I know exactly where I want to lead this country," the Republican incumbent says in one ad. "I'm optimistic about America because I believe in the people of America."

<snip>Advisers say the ads are meant to show that the country is safer and stronger today because of Bush and to make the case that Bush's policies have put America on the right path.

"We thought it important to start with a setting the table of where the country's been over the last three years," said Matthew Dowd, the campaign's chief strategist.

Dowd called the ads - one 60-second spot and three 30-second spots, including one in Spanish - the beginning of a conversation that will last until the election. He said ads will be on the air consistently but not necessarily every day until Nov. 2.<snip>

By the way, will the adds include him reading a story about a goat to a kid while the country was under attack? Is that the steady leadership we are talking about here?

There is nothing noble in being steady...Saddam was "steady"
If you don't have enough wisdom to change course when things are going wrong or enough humilty to say "I made a mistake" what is so great about your leadership?

5. Note the new talking points words
I have heard a few GOPers lately and the repetition of steady, strong, stable leadership is quite hypnotic. Steady, strong, stable... all comforting words.

I would like to see the Dem talkers out there saying: the GOP is using these words in order to get you to think this way. This is how they propagandize you. The more people are alerted to the process, the less power it has over them.

71. I'm hoping they do, too, Nancy...I hope Kerry's ad folks are up to this
They have all the material anybody could every DREAM to have to use against bush....and to FINALLY have an opportunity to inform the American public. At least, they could show enough true clips to make even the fundiest fundies start scratching their heads, and saying "ya, that kinda IS what's been going on. This is NOT good".

I honestly and truly hope Kerry has enough sense not to go too far to center to take bush to the mat. If he does, he'll marginalize himself, and bush has a HUGE war chest to work with. Kerry needs to just stick with the truth, and show people what's true, and he'll have all the ammunition he needs to get the support of the people.

:kick:

And, Sadiesworld, I think Clark would make a fine VP! :loveya:

Edited on Wed Mar-03-04 05:14 PM by Vitruvius
Nothing, nothing, nothing!

Bu$h the Commander in Chief was absent from his post on 9/11 until the attacks were safely over. Just like he was AWOL from the Texas Air National Guard during Vietnam.

Once an AWOL, always an AWOL. The only things Bu$h did on 9/11 were (a) flee from one rabbit hole to the next till the danger was over and (b) read a speech somebody wrote for him -- in a shaky voice.

22. We need a commercial of the *
sitting reading the "goat story" simultaenouly with the 2nd aircraft hitting the world trade center, then with the footage of the hero firefighters working in Manhattan with the quote of the asshole claiming he was getting out of "harms way" then they need a picture of the empty seat of the 9-11 commission with the asshole telling the "bad pilot story" and finish it with the mis leading theme and have them list all the "misleading" actions starting with WMD's. The voice over could reflect the fact that 9-11 should not be politicized but the truth needs to be told so that "it will never happen again" They need to fight fire with fire and of course I agree witht he fact that Clark is the best VP candidate to counter National Security.

They should use that speech that the * uses and they repeat on CNN about waffling about how he was for something and then against and change it to backfire on the * "For no child left behind" didn't fund it. and so on. The whole misleading theme can be used effectively.

Yes, he really did say that at the end of 2001, a year in which there was considerable post-election bitterness and protesting, thousands lost their jobs, thousands lost their lives, and America went to war.

I heard him make that statement at media availability for some minor matter (such as showing off White House decor). If you Google the phrase, you'll probably get the White House website.

I was always surprised there wasn't more public outrage over that comment. My cousin almost drove off the road when I told her that Bush made that statement.

Mark Crispin Miller, in "The Bush Dyslexicon," includes the quote without commentary, probably because it's just so jaw-droppingly insensitive that it can stand on its own.

"But all in all, it's been a fabulous year for Laura and me."

http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2001/12/20011221-2.html

It is reflective of a supremely narcissistic, callous mindset. The world revolves around him in his mind. As Miller has pointed out this mindset evidences itself repeatedly in his inability to acknowledge his many errors.

Well Junior, saying it doesn't make it so. Your "steady leadership" has bankrupted the treasury and compromised the future of every American, your "steady leadership" has alienated our allies and earned worldwide emnity weakening our security, your "steady leadership" has plunged us into an unecessary and brutal war that is claiming lives and draining the treasury to enrich the Halliburton's of the world, your "steady leadership" has rewarded corporations with lavish tax breaks as they ship their jobs overseas, your "steady leadership" has gutted environmental protections and threatened the health of millions. This type of "steady leadership" is, in sum, leading this nation over a cliff into an abyss. See Junior, "steady leadership" means more than dressing up in a flight suit and playing soldier or calling yourself a"war president." True leadership is being able to address the needs and concerns of every American not just those selected few multimillionaires who can pony up 2,500 in pocket change to attend one of the limitless number of fundraisers which you seem to spend all of your time attending. Come November 2, 2004 we will have genuinely steady leadership, not the tawdry Hollywood style cartoonish imitation your handlers have created, and you can look forward to spending all of your time at the ranch clearing brush.

26. I don't think America will want to continually be reminded of 911...
Who wants to be reminded of tragedy all the time? Is that his 'upbeat' message? I hope they spent a lot of money on these adds, because he is identified with 911 alright, in a very negative way! And they still don't have Osama...and you know what? I'm beginning to think they never will.

OBL has a lot of billionaire relatives...and is a hero to many Muslims. I'll bet Bush can't get him. If he is even trying. The recent spate of rumors about him being penned up in Pakistan are probably just propaganda to make us THINK they have a clue, and are trying to get him. I'll bet they have no clue and aren't even trying.

But those adds are like being reminded of going to a close relatives funeral, time after time. I'll bet they backfire. And everyone knows Bush, and most other politicians ran like hell when they (allegedly) thought we were under attack!

So the adds have us rising phoenix like from the ashes-"safer, stronger, etc..."? What a crock. The American people won't buy it.

79. As a matter of fact, I don't.
But most Americans DO believe it. Sorry to say.

I for one, believe we will never know what 'really happened'. We will be 'protected' from the knowledge! Just as we almost always are.

But I am also saying, that guilty or innocent, I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for a capture. I don't think it's gonna happen. The GOP keeps floating these teasing little tidbits, just to keep the whole thing alive!

They think that keeping fresh the memory of 911 and OBL will help them in the fall. I do not. I think it is like burying a close relative in your front yard, but never filling the grave in.

If that is all they have, I am not worried!

he ain't gonna make it on this because it is obviously more lies. What is needed is for the Dem candidate, and it looks like Kerry, to counteract this stupidity and these lies with real hard facts.
A call in person on C-span the other day thought Bush was a great leader because he gave her back money, in the form of tax cuts. this is what is important to selfish, greedy people--their money returned to them--no matter if there social services have been cut, such as their firefighters, as long as Bush give them back their money--and she said that no president or leader has done that-she was so in love with Bush for doing that--I think she was more in love with herself and her money and the notion that she does not want to give it to anyone else in the society, even if it is the firefighers, who protect her!

This is not a time to be nice to the dictator. I hope Kerry has it in him--I do have my doubts.

It has to be pounded in that Bush is an incompetant man not suited for office and it has to be pounded that Bush has lied about almost everything--and these lies have caused the deaths of ten thousand civilains in Iraq.

Can Kerry do it? Is he up to the task, willing to take the risk? Or is he just playing politics as usual?

Whatever--we are forced to vote for him over Bush, like him or not.

36. Votes are easily purchased
Odds are that the caller received a tax reduction of $20 a month or so
+ the $600. This is probably a windfall to many. A small price to pay for maintaining control of the WH and Congress, so that they can do whatever they want.

No matter want kind of genocide Bush involves the US in, it won't matter to Mr & Mrs citizen, as long as they get a little refund, and he pays lip service to the anti-abortion crusade.

29. I will give him some credit for his leadership.
I mean running like a little bitch on Sept. 11 2001. Then calling the suspects folks. After that he hid under his bed some more and told a bunch of generals and military-industrial types bomb whatever the fuck you want. Then let's see, oh yeah he used the shock of that event to get more tax cuts for the rich and enlarge NAFTA, etc. Yup he's as good a leader as Cobra Commander on GIJoe.

35. Here's the ad
I just need to shorten it up by about 5 minutes.

http://www.takebackthemedia.com/true911.html

It shows that Bush KNEW and DID NOTHING (sat in the Booker Elementary school for over half an hour reading a book about goats.)

No one mentions the STEADT stream of urine running down his leg while he hid behind the toilet on air force one..

38. Steady Leadership
Our Great Leader, War-President Bush is staying the course. He has made his decisions based in good faith on the information available to him and has resolutely made up his mind. He will not turn back from the course he has set for the country no matter how many times it is demonstrated that his path is the wrong one...

Bush* is a fuck up there is no way that the mess he has created can be spun as being a net positive for this country. Even if you give him every benefit of the doubt about his motivations and decision making processes its still a disaster. People are not going to forgive a mistake that cost 100s or 1,000s dead and 100s of billion dollars even if he thought he was doing the right thing at the time. he may have thought it was right, but it turns out it was wrong and at an immense cost.

39. A steady stream of lies......
Month after month and year after year we hear
the jobs are....

Just around the corner
On the horizon
Speedily approaching
Arriving directly
Quickly materializing
Promptly nearing
Almost here
Within sight
Soon to flourish
About to happen
Presenting itself
Turning around
About to happen
Soon to arrive
Within our grasp
Forthcoming soon
Appearing promptly
Returning soon
Within our view
Coming to pass
About to develop
Coming to life
On the verge
Poised to appear

OMG.....people are sooooo tired of this crap!

51. remember Daschle.....demanded apology from bush?
2002

WASHINGTON, Sept. 25 —............ leader, demanded an apology from President Bush for saying that Democrats were "not interested in the security of the American people."

In an emotional speech on the Senate floor, Mr. Daschle seized on Mr. Bush's statement on Monday that the Senate, where Democrats favor protecting workers' rights in the proposed Homeland Security Department, "is more interested in special interests in Washington."

Mr. Daschle took offense, saying: "That is wrong. We ought not politicize this war. We ought not politicize the rhetoric about war and life and death."

He added, his voice growing raspy: "You tell those who fought in Vietnam and World War II they are not interested in the security of the American people," because they are Democrats. "That is outrageous."

Nice ads.

I love the fact that they are using Laura Bush in the campaign. She really is a strong point. I doubt seriously that TeRAYsa will be highlighted.

I am impressed with all three spots.

Kerry's staff is going to have to arrange some photo ops for him so they can get shots of him looking more atheletic, more manly, less "stuffed shirt"-ish. He has no chance against Bush in his jeans and denim shirt, pilot suit, Baseball jacket...LET'S SEE, WHICH MAN HAS MORE IN COMMON WITH THE AMERICAN PUBLIC???

Geez, they ought to stick him on a horse just to highlight Bush's fear of horses. Some cowboy, huh?

57. What pisses me off is their presumption that our people are THAT gullible!
After having taken advantage of the American people's loyalty and trust, (by betraying both),...now, they insult our intelligence!!!

Believe me,...they may fool all their loyalists all the time,...but, the vast majority of American people will definitely be pissed-off by any further "marketing" techniques. HEY, NEOCONS, YOUR PRODUCT SUCKS AND WE AREN'T BUYING,...buncha' greedy, grimy, chickshit, fabricators!!!! They are worse than either used car salesmen or lawyers!!! YUCK!!!
