All Manitoba restaurants and bars will have to go smoke-free on Oct. 1.WINNIPEG - Manitoba will become the first jurisdiction in Canada with a province-wide smoking ban on Oct. 1 if a bill introduced Tuesday makes it through the legislature.
Bill 21 lays out fines for people who light up in indoor workplaces and public areas, including hotels, restaurants and bars.
The smoking ban will not include outdoor patios, hotel rooms, and areas under federal jurisdiction such as military bases, federal prisons and aboriginal reserves.
The province promised to help ease Manitoba's hospitality industry into the post-ban world, but Healthy Living Minister Jim Rondeau would not say if financial compensation would be offered.
