Gays demand county issue marriage licenses

Gay couples plan to gather Thursday in the Cook County clerk's office to demand marriage licenses.

They say they'll also increase pressure on Mayor Daley, Cook County Clerk David Orr and other elected officials who say they publicly support gay marriage but aren't taking active steps toward making it legal.

"Your actions must speak louder than your words," Keeanga Taylor, of Chicago's Equal Marriage Now, said at an outdoor press conference at the County Building on Tuesday.

No, not the demonstrations or protests, but how the pols are playing this:

Daley, Mayor, says he's all for it but the decision rests with the County.

Orr, County Clerk, says he's all for it but needs direction from superiors.

Stroger, County Board Chairman, says he's all for it but needs direction from the State.

Madigan, Atty. General, Illinois, says the law is clear. If the legislature wants to change the law, she's all for it.

This is the FIRST time that politicians in Illinois, especially Cook County, are PASSING a buck instead of pocketing it!

All kidding aside, the Dems OWN the legistaure and state house. If they want this, there isn't a thing Repubs can do about it. However, it IS an election year and I doubt they'll tackle this until after Obama/Kerry are elected.
