Democrat claims US House seat in Calif.

LOS ANGELES – Democrat Judy Chu easily claimed a vacant U.S. House seat Tuesday in a Los Angeles-area district, reinforcing the Democratic majority on Capitol Hill.

The former state Assembly member will become Southern California's only Asian-American in Congress. She will be sworn in Thursday, giving Democrats a 256-178 edge over Republicans in the House.

With 173 of 209 precincts reporting Tuesday night, Chu had 14,115 votes, or 62 percent. She was trailed by her cousin by marriage, Republican Betty Chu, with 7,355 votes, or 32 percent.
"I'm really proud and honored and humbled to have such an overwhelming vote," Chu told The Associated Press from her victory party in Covina.

With House Democratic leaders pushing a $1.5 trillion health care measure toward a vote in the full House by month's end, Chu said she was urged to get to Washington fast and "get ready to vote immediately."

8. Apart from L.A., Southern California is basically Republican, so no shock.

10. Yeah, but LA is where all the people live
Very easy to offset (I'm referring to a presidential election) the OC & SD Republicans with the huge population of strongly Democratic LA..

There was a time when CA. was actually quite Republican, I think from 1956-1988, the only Democrat to win CA. in a general election was LBJ in 1964...

But those days are over, & I can't see CA. going Republican for a long, long, time if ever...
:woohoo:

14. Ditto. LA has more Koreans than any city except Seoul.
And try looking up anyone named 'Nguyen' in the phone book -- pages and pages of sheer frustration, like a Google search that's all false positives.

7. We need to put the sole of our boot to the throat of the Republicans
The Democratic majority in both the House of Representatives and the Senate should deign the Republicans the opportunity to add amendments to the Appropriations bills.

The Republicans have to be stopped from polluting the important workings of Congress with trash like

Broadcaster Freedom Amendment

9. Good news. Would have been better news if she were in Orange County, but it's still good.
Please don't be a Republicrat, though, girl.

17. That's the news I was looking for..
I knew it was somebody that left for the Obama admin..thank you, CreekDog.

I read about this the other day that Judy Chu was up against Betty Chu and someone advised to know the difference in the names when they voted..I guess they did since the right Chu won.:)
