Cyanide-leach ban may be put on ballot again
Mining backers want state's voters to repeal restrictionBy MIKE DENNISON

HELENA -- Mining-industry supporters Tuesday began an effort to repeal the state ban on gold and silver mines that use a cyanide-leaching process, filing papers for a ballot measure to strike the ban.
The measure, if it earns a spot on the Nov. 2 ballot and is approved by Montana voters, would repeal a ban passed by voters in 1998.
"We're using the (initiative) process that those who are opposed to mining have always embraced," said Tammy Johnson, a Whitehall consultant who filed the proposed measure with state officials for a required legal review. "We're taking it to the people. We look forward to an open debate."
Once review of the petition is complete, supporters can begin gathering signatures to attempt to place the measure on the Nov. 2 ballot.
