Iraqi prisoners were allegedly hooded, scalded with boiling water and had their heads flushed down the toilet by British soldiers during the war, an inquiry heard today

Detainees taken captive also claim they were urinated on and forced to lie face down over a hole in the ground filled with excrement, the hearing was told.

The allegations emerged at the start of the public inquiry into the death of Baha Mousa and so-called conditioning techniques used to 'soften up' prisoners for interrogation.

The inquiry will aim to work out the cause of Mr Mousa's death and 'what conduct' brought it about as well as examine the training and guidelines for soldiers.

Conditioning methods including hooding, handcuffing, sleep deprivation, and forcing prisoners into stress positions were banned in 1972 by Edward Heath after an investigation into interrogation in Northern Ireland, the inquiry heard.

Nobody in the succeeding 30 years appeared to suggest Parliament had authorised use of the techniques by the army as an aid to interrogation, Mr Elias said.
