Multnomah County (OR) To Issue Gay Marriage Licenses
http://www.kgw.com/news-local/stories/kgw_030204_news_gay_marriage.4953bd76.html

Multnomah County is poised to become the fourth community in the country to marry same-sex couples after announcing that it will issue marriage licenses to gays and lesbians starting Wednesday morning.

...

Multnomah County Judge Linda Bergman told KGW on Tuesday night that she will schedule and perform marriage ceremonies for same-sex couples if they have a license when they make an appointment.

...

The controversy stirring around same-sex unions in Oregon also hearkens back to the state's past debates on gay rights.

In 2000, voters defeated Measure 9, which would have banned homosexuality from being presented in schools in a positive light. It was the third anti-gay rights measure voted down in the state in eight years.

1. Yayyy. This gives me hope for my town.
It's so damn conservative here in Oregon. I swear, sometimes I think that I moved to some appalachian town.

But this gives me great hope for the west coast. Go PDX.

3. where did you move from?
i came here from colorado, and breathed a huge sigh of relief the day i got here in 1986. i had no idea that i didn't have to feel like a freak every day of my life before coming here. every town has its redneck contingent--even l.a. and nyc. but, yeah, the native oregonian is something to behold.

4. I moved from Santa Cruz California
After having lived there for twenty five years. Jeez, Colorado is worst then here? That is scary.

Yes, the native Oregonian is truly something to behold.

8. Make that native *rural* Oregonian
I am a native Oregonian, grew up in rural Oregon until I was 7, then moved to Portland. I shudder to think of going through middle and high school in that little logging town. Portland (and myself) are very progressive. Portland, Eugene and Bend are islands of reason in a sea of Oregonian ignorance. I'm sure that it is this way all over the US, cities are places where enlightenment happens.

The world needs better rural schools, maybe with the internet it is possible some day in the future.

Please continue discussion within the original LBN Thread on this topic, posted Tuesday evening by missb:

It would be very helpful if you could add any links or new news coverage to the original thread.

Thanks!
