CIA Director Panetta terminated covert program; Congress considering full probe

CIA Director Leon Panetta has terminated a "very serious" covert program the spy agency kept secret from Congress for eight years, Rep. Jan Schakowsky, a House Intelligence subcommittee chairwoman, said Friday.

Schakowsky said she is pressing for an immediate committee investigation of the classified program, which has not been described publicly. Rep. Silvestre Reyes, D-Texas, the chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, has said he is considering an investigation.

"The program is a very, very serious program and certainly deserved a serious debate at the time and through the years," she told The Associated Press in an interview. "But now it's over."

Democrats revealed late Tuesday that the CIA Director Leon Panetta had informed Congress in late June that the spy agency had been withholding important information about a secret program begun after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

However, there are plenty of other options. The CIA and NSA could have been feeding trading data to Goldman-Sachs. There is an entire raft of older programs, probably resuscitated by the Bush people, designed to destabilize foreign governments, force increased corporate influences, control water supplies, and who knows what the hell else.

The torture and assassination thing, though, is as rock solid as anything can be in the wake of our Orwellian overlords. It's only a matter of time before it comes out. Mass murder rarely stays entirely unacknowledged.

Edit: As I mentioned in my journal here last month, President Obama may be attempting to control the release of information in order to prepare for the explosion of violence and anti-American sentiment that is sure to follow on the heels of the disclosure.

Now, I think I can sort of see the framework of how that's happening. Troops are being pulled back to the dozen-or-so impregnable fortresses we used half the world's supply of concrete to build. The CIA announces a shutdown of a program they don't wish to name. The line is (theoretically) being held on the release of torture photos. In a year, our troops will be as safe as they can be on Iraqi soil, the Department of Justice will have completed its investigations in secret, Seymour Hersch's book will be out or his dead-man switch will be pulled, and Iraq is either going to erupt into total chaos or have the promise of seeing some known American heads rolling. It won't be Dick Cheney's, though. He's too damned evil to be caught.

because the national security demands disclosure,

and even if disclosure causes some harm, it is inconsequental
compared to the harm that has been done by these secret games.

Considering? It seems to me the CIA withholding "important information about a secret intelligence program" should DEMAND an investigation. It also begs the question, what else are they withholding?
