US oil company challenges Australia's rights to develop Timor Sea

An American-based oil company has launched a lawsuit in Washington, challenging Australia's rights to develop oil and gas in the Timor Sea.

Our reporter, Anne Barker, says Oceanic lost a separate case in Australia's Federal court last year.

Oceanic claims its subsidiary Petrotimor was granted exclusive rights to develop the Timor Sea in 1974.

In court documents it accuses Australia, Indonesia and the oil giant ConocoPhillips of conspiring to steal its concession, after Indonesia invaded East Timor.

2. Of course, poor little East Timor won't get a look in.

They're so desperately poor, but Howard thinks this should be
Australia's payback for helping the East Timorese against Indonesia,
about twenty years too late. If there was no oil, the Indonesians
would be in full control by now.
