Six Seven Members of Congress Say Panetta Testified That CIA Misled Congress
By Spencer Ackerman 7/8/09 7:26 PM

Remember how CIA Director Leon Panetta said in May that members of the House Intelligence Committee “will have to determine” whether the CIA accurately and appropriately briefed Congress about the agency’s “enhanced interrogation program”? It appears that Panetta reached a conclusion himself.

On June 26, six seven Democrats on the committee — Anna Eshoo (Calif.), John Tierney (Mass.), Rush Holt (N.J.), Mike Thompson (Calif.), Alcee Hastings (Fla.) and Jan Schakowsky (Ill.) — wrote to Panetta, “Recently you testified that you have determined that top CIA officials have concealed significant actions from all Members of Congress, and misled Members for a number of years from 2001 to this week.” The letter — which doesn’t explain what those “significant actions” concerned* — asks that Panetta “publicly correct” his May 15 statement that it isn’t CIA “policy or practice to mislead Congress.” TWI acquired a copy of the letter, which comes after CQ reported that committee chairman Silvestre Reyes (D-Texas) also nebulously stated that CIA “affirmatively lied” to the committee.

But CIA spokesman George Little says it’s “completely wrong” to say Panetta determined CIA misled Congress, as the six legislators charge. “Director Panetta stands by his May 15 statement,” Little said. “It is not the policy or practice of the CIA to mislead Congress. This Agency and this Director believe it is vital to keep the Congress fully and currently informed. Director Panetta’s actions back that up. As the letter from these six representatives notes, it was the CIA itself that took the initiative to notify the oversight committees.”

Little continued: “As for the Congress, as the Speaker has said, ‘We all share great respect for the dedicated men and women of the Intelligence Community who are deeply committed to the safety and security of the American people.’”

Here’s the full letter:

2. House Democrats say CIA lied (Nancy Pelosi was RIGHT after all)
Source: MSNBC

Claim contradicts earlier statement by CIA that it doesn't mislead, conceal

WASHINGTON - CIA Director Leon Panetta told Congress last month that senior CIA officials have concealed significant actions and misled lawmakers repeatedly since 2001, the chairman and other members of the House Intelligence Committee said in letters revealed Wednesday.

Exactly what actions Panetta disclosed to the House Intelligence Committee on June 24 are unclear, but committee chairman Silvestre Reyes, D-Texas, said that the CIA outright lied in one case.

"These notifications have led me to conclude that this committee has been misled, has not been provided full and complete notifications, and (in at least one case) was affirmatively lied to," Reyes wrote in a letter Tuesday to Michigan Rep. Peter Hoekstra, the committee's senior Republican. A copy of the letter was obtained by The Associated Press.

5. Supposedly Panetta said this in a 'classified' briefing - can....
....congress members disclose the contents of classified briefings with impunity?

I think those who have classified clearances get 'disciplined' if they disclose 'classified' information....

11. MMM gee I think they lie just to practice
Anyone who could doubt the CIA would lie needs to look into their history.

They started out as the OSS, then during WWII they helped hide and spirit out high ranking Nazis.
Some of those involved John Foster Dulles (Dulles Airport)and his brother, Prescott Bush, Robert McNamara*as head of GM who kept their Opel plant open. Henry Ford* kept the Ford plant open in Germany, Andrew Mellon(alcoa aluminum and banks).
The cabal overlapped between our republican government folks and corporations.
After the war OSS later CIA helped many Nazis and their stolen treasure to reach South America. The author also theorizes that they also kept a good bit of that loot for later R projects.

I have some doubts about some of it, but the vast part of it can be backed up by files in the library of congress which is where I went and looked..until a bunch was suddenly "classified". I found myself under investigation and on the no fly list when I needed to go home to see my beloved Grandmother before she died. I spoke up about the election theft in 2000 when myself and several other persons witnessed our ballots taken from our polling place in Fort Lauderdale and put into truck mounted shredders. They were not even taken to the Broward County courthouse, where the rest were shredded after the SSupine court ordered that shrub 'won'. I have also talked to some survivors from then, including a few relatives who independently said very much the same things.

This is the online version of the above book at Amazon.

18. I think we are just peeling back yet another layer of the onion skin
on the lies and misrepresentations of the Bush cabal over the past 9 years... yes, 9 year, including what lies Bush told, and got covered up in 2000 during the election campaign.

If we had all the records of his arrests, and his going AWOL, if that had been open to the US public, even the Republicans wouldn't have allowed him to be their nominee.

Who is a former director of the CIA??? Why it's Pappy Bush, GHW BUSH!!!!

Calling in favors for his boy, in 2000.

23. k*r And here it is on Yahoo News via Bloomberg

http://news.yahoo.com/s/bloomberg/20090709/pl_bloomberg/avp991mwyfpe

July 9 (Bloomberg) -- Six Democrats on the U.S. House Intelligence Committee said that CIA Director Leon Panetta told lawmakers the agency has misled Congress since 2001 about "significant actions."

In a letter to Panetta, the six legislators said he had "recently" testified that "top CIA officials have concealed significant actions from all members of Congress" and "misled members" from 2001 until this week.

The letter, released by the lawmakers yesterday, didn't describe what Central Intelligence Agency actions were at issue.

The agency went to the panel with the new information, CIA spokesman George Little said in a statement last night. "As the letter from these six representatives notes, it was the CIA that

25. "We lied, but it's not policy to do so."
I'm guessing that the short story is that they told congress they were using EIT, without telling Congress that EIT *could* be classified as torture, but *hadn't* been classified as such by the White House.

Lies of omission.
