DeLay Supports Tougher TV Indecency Fines
WASHINGTON -- House Majority Leader Tom DeLay told broadcasters on Tuesday that he supports harsher penalties for those who air indecent material.

DeLay, addressing the annual legislative conference of the National Association of Broadcasters, said legislation to raise the maximum fine for indecency from $27,500 to $275,000 would soon reach the House floor.

"Congress should speak clearly on this issue and not allow the bill or the debate to get bogged down by extraneous issues of regulatory retribution," said DeLay, R-Texas.

He also told the broadcasters he will fight attempts to lower the new limit on how many TV stations a company can own.

DeLay's comments came after Senate Minority Leader Tom Daschle, D-S.D., said Senate Democrats will try to get Congress to limit companies to owning TV stations that reach 35 percent of the viewing public, down from the 39 percent cap lawmakers approved in January.

7. Is that an exact quote?
If so, I'm going to spread it far and wide!

BTW, I think it's indecent when they slip episodes of those CSI shows on before the hour (they come on at 9:59 or something) and I have to see gross, dead bodies, which I cannot stand; it gives me nightmares. Is Tom DeLay looking out for that?

5. Hope he plans on including
the tv commercials that encourage the use of pesticides on home lawns and yards as indecent TV.

What these commercials fail to do is educate the viewer that these products should not be used if there are children, pregnant women, the elderly, sick, pets and livestock in the neighborhood.

They also do not inform the viewer that some of the products that American companies are getting rich off of are banned in Europe where "socialized medicine" has meant taking greater care with everyone's health - not just corporate fat cats.

11. Certainly not DeLay -I wouldn't trust him with even a hen house
He's only taking this holier than tho rant again, to divert attention from the growing corporate repuke party finance scandal in Texas. He's an expert at diversionary tactics. I think he and Karl Rove are actually related. They both at least pay homage to the Lee Attwater tried and true wag the dog. Voters have short attention spans, spin your troubles away by creating another issue. Frame it in moral piety and you have a winner. Mission accomplished.

DeLay your corporate money laundering is far more obscene than anything that can be said or shown on the air waves.

10. Will that include Rush and Hannity too?
Rush was pretty indecent during the Clinton smearing. Or does this just apply to "liberal" shows?

12. My, how we're in decline as a society
We're devolving faster than you can say "Father knows best." What is to blame for this hysterical bout of regression and recrimination, other than the confluence of ignorant religious fundamentalism and the rank incompetence of our economic and war chieftains?

The worse we fair at trade, employment, and imperial conquest, the harsher the cultural projects of our puritans. What will rid them of this post-9/11 ardor? Where's the equivalent of chemical castration for these Viagra-stoked conservative white male culture molesters?

14. hee hee hee
I was at the video store tonight, and the TV was on. I wasn't paying attention, just looking at the new release selection. I was aware (on a nearly subconcious level) that Queen's "We Are the Champions" was playing in the background. Suddenly I hear a guy telling us to call our doctor about Viagra.

I couldn't help it - I busted up laughing. The owner of the store joined me, once he figured out why.

Does this mean that every time GW appears on TV there will be a fine levied? What could be more indecent than him?
