Source: Schwarzenegger Won't Run for California Governor
Arnold Schwarzenegger (search) won't seek the California governor's office in conjunction with a recall election set for October, a source close to the actor told Fox News.

Schwarzenegger, 55, is said to have met Sunday with former Los Angeles Mayor Richard Riordan (search). Riordan and Schwarzenegger are close, and Riordan said last week that he would consider a run if Schwarzenegger decided against a bid.

<snip>

But Schwarzenegger consultant George Gorton told the Associated Press that Schwarzenegger hasn't made a decision yet, and is still considering the impact a run would have on his family.

7. If he really hopes to have a political future, this is a good decision
I don't see any way there is a good outcome of this for Arnold. If he runs, and wins, he has to take over a state that is in a terrible mess with no time to plan or prepare and expectations at super-high levels, along with a raging opposition. If he runs and loses, well, then, he's a loser. If he truly would like to have a political career, I think he'd be a fool to get into this.

I really have a hard time understanding how the repugs think this is going to be good for them. I think it was a very short-sighted idea, promoted by Darrell Issa for Darrell Issa and now the whole repug party is going to end up stained with it.

To me, it's a classic expression of that old adage, "Be careful what you wish for, you just might get it."

9. Total Recall: Schwarzenegger denies dropping political aspirations (AFP)
LOS ANGELES (AFP) - US action star and politician-in-waiting Arnold Schwarzenegger is still deciding whether or not to run for the post of governor of the state of California, an advisor said.

http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=1511&ncid=1511&e=9&u=/afp/20030729/wl_afp/us_politics_california_030729022627

(Hmmm, I'm happy to see that AFP is now being carried on U.S. Yahoo...always had to go to Singapore's site for the real news...)
