Senate Democrats to Pawlenty: certify Franken
Edited on Tue Jun-30-09 02:29 PM by Lone_Star_Dem

WASHINGTON (AP) — Senate Democrats are urging Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty to certify Democrat Al Franken's election to the Senate following the state Supreme Court's ruling that the former Saturday Night Live comedian defeated GOP incumbent Norm Coleman.

Majority Leader Harry Reid said Tuesday that Pawlenty should respect the votes of his constituents and his state's highest court. Coleman and the governor did not immediately return calls seeking comment on the ruling.

Reid Urges Minn Gov Pawlenty To Certify Franken Senate Victory

Reid said that Senate Democrats looked forward to welcoming Franken as the 60th Democratic senator shortly.

"He will play a crucial role as we work to strengthen our economy, ensure all Americans can access and afford quality health care, make our country more energy independent, confirm the president's outstanding nominee to the Supreme Court, and tackle the many other challenges we face," Reid said.

Dems put pressure on T-Paw, Coleman
From NBC's Mark Murray
Not surprisingly, Democrats are now putting pressure on Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty to certify Al Franken as the winner in Minnesota, and on Norm Coleman to bow out of the race.

Sen. Bob Menendez, chairman of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, said: "We've always said that Norm Coleman deserved his day in court, and he got eight months. Now we expect Gov. Pawlenty to do the right thing, follow the law, and sign the election certificate."

Added DNC Chairman Tim Kaine: "Norm Coleman should concede and Gov. Pawlenty should sign the election certificate which Al Franken is entitled to."

And here's Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid: "I once again encourage Gov. Pawlenty to respect the votes of his constituents and the decisions of his state's highest court. He should put politics aside, follow his state's laws and finally sign the certificate that will bring this episode to an end."

4. Don't get too used to seeing it...
Reid and Pelosi apparently need about 500 people standing behind them to even ponder growing a backbone, thousands (from the senate alone, a statistical impossibility I know, but then this is Reid and Pelosi we're talking about) to actually show that backbone and do something worth while.

But don't worry, they're keeping the powder dry...

:sarcasm:

3. What does the law allow for a time frame?
Does the governor have to abide by the MSC's ruling and order by a certain time?

Certify Franken or I'll huff and I'll puff; and if you still don't certify him, I'll huff and I'll puff some more.
