Some Mark Sanford trips were taxpayer-paid

South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford has taken at least three taxpayer-paid trips to Argentina, however, it’s unclear whether he met his girlfriend during any of them.

At his news conference in Columbia Wednesday, Sanford said he paid for his most recent trip with is own money. “It was my own ticket,” he told reporters.

But sometime after his 2002 election as governor, Sanford traveled to Argentina on the dime of the South Carolina Department of Commerce.

Though it’s unclear precisely when the trip occurred, it likely would have taken place after he had met the woman. Sanford said Wednesday he met the woman eight years ago, though a romantic relationship did not develop until one year ago.

8. No surprise here
Cheap Bastard wouldn't miss the chance to let us, the have nots pay for his trips. Of course, he didn't want to wife to find this out so that is another reason why using tax payer dollars was the smarter way to go. He was never going to leave his wife, he loves his funds most of all.

13. What does the C-Street connection have to do with this? I have a theory, but that is all it is.
My theory is based on speculation about what actually happened and what C Street is. I'm sorry I'm not sourcing all of my assumptions, but it is just too late tonight. I may supplement this post tomorrow.

Here is some relevant information about Sanford.

Marshall Clement "Mark" Sanford, Jr. (born May 28, 1960) is an American politician from South Carolina. From 1994 to 2000, he served as the Republican representative in the United States House of Representatives for South Carolina's 1st congressional district, where he was a staunch conservative with an independent streak. In 2002, he was elected the 115th Governor of South Carolina, where he had a contentious relationship with the South Carolina legislature.

Sanford was reelected Governor in 2006, where he campaigned against pork barrel spending. In office, notably, he rejected stimulus funds for his state from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 but later took it so that it would not be distributed to other states. Sanford's governorship has been put into doubt by extended disappearances he recently revealed to be part of an extramarital affair with an Argentine. Until June 24, 2009, he was the chairman of the Republican Governors Association.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mark_Sanford

I understand that Sanford lived at C Street while in D.C. I also understand that Sanford claims to have known this woman for 8 years but that he also claims that he just started his affair with her a year ago. Finally I understand that he told his wife about this some five months ago. Assuming that my understanding is correct, why is he saying that he discussed this at C Street? He was elected governor in 2002 and 2006. He was no longer living at C Street, so did he go back to discuss his marital problems? Why didn't he deal with this with his hometown pastor or with a marital counselor? Why did he discuss it at C Street? He hasn't lived there for years if my understanding of the dates is correct.

Here is my thought: C Street pretends to be a religious organization but is actually a political organization. I have heard that the organization behind it scouts for, identifies and promotes electable personalities who are supposedly Christian and who do whatever the C Street and its backers advise in order to rise in politics. I have read that on the net so I don't know if it is true. I am assuming it to be true for the sake of my theory.

Assuming that C Street is a Christian group that promotes certain people for political office, could it be that Sanford returned to C Street to discuss running for the presidency or the Senate in 2010 when his term as governor ends? That would make sense with the timeline. He would be considering his political future and talking about his options with folks at C Street now well before his term ends.

Maybe this whole trip to Argentina was planned to clean up Sanford's act so he can run for higher office. This guy needs to be asked to resign -- now. There is more to this deal than meets the eye. The whole break-up is incredibly scripted and perfectly timed to make everyone forgive and forget by 2010.

15. S.C. gov. to pay state for trip where he saw mistress
<snip>

"South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford says he will reimburse the state for an economic development trip he took to Argentina last year during which he met with his mistress.

The Republican said in a statement today that he visited with the woman during the trade mission to Brazil and Argentina last June. Sanford said he "made a mistake" in seeing the woman while in Argentina.

State Commerce Department records indicate more than $8,000 was spent in airfare, lodging and meals. The governor's statement does not say how much he will pay back."
