Gas-price jump has motorists grumbling across California
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/news/archive/2004/03/01/state1949EST0221.DTL

With many Californians paying 20-cents more a gallon than they did just two weeks ago, motorists grumbled Monday as they filled their gas tanks.

"The prices are just outrageous" said Nat Williams, a pipe-fitter in Los Angeles. "It's getting to the point where you can't even drive to work."

Larry Evans, a retired Marine who lives in his 37-foot motor home in San Diego, fumed as he bought just $20 of gas to get by. It costs $90 to fill up his vehicle and Evans is struggling to afford even short trips.

"I went from steak to baloney," he said. "I have to cut back on everything. I can't do no joy-riding."

<snip>

But state Assemblywoman Christine Kehoe, who heads a committee that will examine gas prices later this month, said she has yet to hear a clear reason for the spike.

"Consumers feel they're being gouged and I agree with them," said the San Diego Democrat.

2. Trade in

Sounds like all those SUV drivers need to trade them in for a Prius.

If it's good enough for Larry David and Ed Bagely, it should be good enough for everybody else.

That is, everyone except Shwarzenegger. I don't think he would fit in a Prius. Not with the GIANT empty head of his ;-)

17. perhaps... creating a "crisis" - in order to get the public support/push
needed to get their atrocious energy bill passed - in time to keep bush's big donors happy and ready to continue anteing up for his campaign.

4. The cost of fuel
Edited on Tue Mar-02-04 12:36 AM by Stevie D
will smash any economic recovery. How can there not be inflation with such steep increases in ALL fuels, not just gasoline and diesel, but fuel oil, electricity and natural gas? Goods and services are affected all up and down the line by the price of transportation.

When all the Mr. Evans' of the country take their summer trips in their gas-guzzlers at $3 per gallon, we'll see just how patriotic they really are, won't we? I can't imagine this looking good for the Republicans. ow are they going do defend this?

on edit: punctuation, added comment

Buck up, Marine!

There are plenty of ills in America more pressing than whether this guy's belly is full of steak or he goes joy-riding.

6. Gas is up to between $1.75-1.80 here
in central New Jersey. A week and a half ago it was $1.50-1.55. I think that's a big jump.

When I moved here in 2000 you could get gas for less than a buck per gallon.

Thanks, yet again Mr. *. Dirtwad.

9. The Oil Companies don't expect Smirky to remain in office. . .
so they're gonna gouge us like they did in the months before Jim Jeffords jumped affiliation and opened them to the possibility of congressional oversite.

12. What's the problem with these prices?
Edited on Tue Mar-02-04 08:32 AM by ze_dscherman
Today's price of regular, unleaded in my German hometown is about 4.93 $ per gallon. Most because gas is highly taxed in most of the EU.

Guess why in Germany there's (quite good, but not sufficient) public transport, people drive economic cars or use the bicycle (like me)?

Actually, this is a good thing. Only that there should be even much more and better public transport, train connections, use of video conferences and preference of local products. After all, fossil fuels are limited, cause pollution and noise and the already starting fights for the last remaining ressources will most probably toss the world as we know it into oblivion.

The more we save scarce ressources, the better is our worlds chance to find new sources of energy before a worst-case scenario kicks in.

14. you are absolutely right, ze dscherman, but in California
public transportation is almost non-existant and distances to vital places like work are often long. There are few alternatives to the commute. So, we are stuck. And this is just the beginning, I am afraid.

18. Same in Germany, if you live in a rural area
In the past decades, public transportation has been axed in many places. Train tracks or small railway stations lie rotten. Many smaller villages don't have a shop or a pub anymore, because people drive their car to the supermarket many kilometers away. If people happen to find a job, it is a looong drive. Those who are too old to drive or too poor , are hopelessly stuck.

Still, I favor petrol taxes that become investeded into public transport. Personally, I ride the seven miles to work on bicycle, in any weather condition. And back. Helps me to keep fit as well.

and you'll get your reward!

Writing from the heart of oil country, the Permian Basin, where self-serve regular is $1.56, surrounded by 100,000 oil wells drilled since 1932.

Gouging? I'm shocked, shocked, I tell you!
