Rafsanjani's daughter arrested in Iran
21 Jun 2009

TEHRAN: The daughter of Iran's former president Akbar Hashemi-Rafsanjani and four relatives were arrested over their involvement in protests against alleged election fraud in Iran, the Fars news agency reported on Sunday.

Faezeh Hashemi, a renowned women's rights activist, former parliament deputy and head of women sports in Iran, has in the recent years emerged, like her father, as one of the main opponents of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Ahmadinejad had before the June 12 election accused Rafsanjani and his children of corruption.

Fars said that Faezeh, her daughter and three other relatives were arrested during Saturday's demonstrations for 'agitating' the protestors.

7. And the youth is 70% of the population--
a demographic most Americans were typically not aware of before all this began, myself included.

16. A lot of Americans are also unaware...
That if we hadn't sold weapons and poison gas to Iraq, there would be a lot more middle-aged people in Iran. About 1,300,000 more, at the very least.

17. Even without the war, most countries in the region have very young populations
I think there's a few where the average age is in the teens, though Iran isn't quite one of those. Add some education to the mix...

9. I'll agree they're "all in": what we don't know is who has the winning hand
The current regime is virtually immune to world opinion, and they have no reservations about using violence to achieve their ends.

2. Apparently Khamenei and Ahmadinejad think they can hold the Council of the Wise hostage
Now evil is in their face working it's iniquity and daring them to do what is right. Wisdom alone must prevail.

5. The Right Wingers need to look good and close - THIS is what TYRANNY looks like

Not this stupid 'Obama' stuff they are throwing out there. What a joke. They need to look good and hard and start thinking.

I don't know if anyone here was following the twitters coming from Iran, but I was so pissed at all the anti-Obama stuff being posted on it by GOP folks - it was distressing. These people are trying to communicate and get news out for helping each other and these GOP dunces are throwing in anti-Obama messages in the mix. (Yes, I confirmed the length of time these folks had been on and it wasn't Iranian govt operatives who newly signed up.)

What if twitter existed in 2001 and was being used by people trapped in the Twin Towers during 911 to communicate back and forth, locate help, etc - and they were given this political garbage. It is cruel beyond belief what some of these Right Wing people are doing and how they operate.

(okay, had to get that out of my system. sorry)

10. Four Rafsanjani relatives released
Four Rafsanjani relatives released
had been arrested for provoking unrest, have been released.

An Iranian security official told Press TV that Rafsanjani's daughter, Faezeh, is still under arrest.

The five, who had been arrested last night according to reports, included Faezeh Hashemi and her daughter, as well as Hossein Mar'ashi's wife, daughter, and sister-in-law -- Mar'ashi is a cousin to Hashemi-Rafsanjani's wife.

13. If she incited unrest, rioting, and violence .....
.....then her arrest is justified.

Even here in the U.S., if someone incited unrest, rioting, and violence, that person would be arrested.

19. even if done peacefully
the throwing of stones and the torching of cars and buildings seem to trigger some sort of containment by the state, as evidenced in all previous incidents of similar nature, wherever they occur:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_riots

A few years ago, the French interiour minister at the time, Sarkozy, labelled the protesting youth of his own country "scum" and put thousands of them in prison -- just because a number of cars and buildings had been torched in the process.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2005_civil_unrest_in_France

Or, when youths in Los Angeles peacefully protested against racist police violence in the early nineties, thousands of Marines rolled in on the fourth day.
