LONDON (AFP) - The families of six British soldiers killed by a mob in southern Iraq (news - web sites) were set to take legal action against the Ministry of Defence.

The relatives were ready to sue for manslaughter, claiming that the deaths of the Royal Military Police soldiers in June last year were due to a series of avoidable army blunders, the Daily Mirror newspaper reported Monday.

Tony Hamilton-Jewell, whose 41-year-old brother Simon died in the attack, told the Daily Mirror that legal action was the families' "last resort to get the truth out".

The six soldiers, all serving with 156 Provost Company of the Royal Military Police, were manning a small police station in al-Majar al-Kabir, 200 kilometres (120 miles) north of Basra, when they were attacked on June 24.
