Guard dies after Holocaust museum shooting
Authorities say they're investigating a white supremacist as the suspect


WASHINGTON - An elderly gunman opened fire with a rifle inside the crowded U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum on Wednesday, fatally wounding a security guard before being shot. Authorities said they were investigating a white supremacist as the suspect.

The assailant and his victim were both hospitalized, said Washington, D.C., Mayor Adrian Fenty, who added that the gunman was in critical condition. The guard died later in the hospital.

D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier said the gunman appeared to have acted alone. He was "engaged by security guards immediately after entering the door" with a rifle, she said. "The second he stepped into the building he began firing."

CNN interviewed former defense secretary Bill Cohen, who was an "ear witness" at the museum. Sec. Cohen had just arrived at the museum and was supposed to meet his wife Janet there. Cohen stated that he saw a car double parked in front of the museum. A moment later, he heard gunshots.

My guess is that he parked the car and rushed the building before anyone could stop him.

a few years ago. He trained and worked with him and is very upset about the news. He said that he was a good man, well meaning and that he had kids. I worry about him and anyone who does a job like that because you just never know. My heart goes out to Mr. Johns' family and I hope that that SOB Van Brunn gets thrown into the roughest prison they could find if he survives this.
