NAACP Launches Campaign To Save Innocent Man From Execution
Source: NAACP

Troy Davis Could Die Within Weeks

The NAACP is launching a campaign called “I AM TROY” to save the life of Troy Davis, an innocent African American man on death row, who will be executed unless Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue or the Savannah District Attorney Larry Chisolm intervene. The NAACP is calling on people to get involved and contact Governor Perdue or Savannah District Attorney Chisolm urging them to not allow the execution of an innocent man.

Davis has been on death row in Georgia for nearly 18 years for the murder of Police Officer Mark Allen MacPhail in Savannah, Georgia. There is no physical evidence linking Davis to the crime and seven of the nine witnesses have recanted or contradicted their original testimony, several saying they were coerced. One of the witnesses who has not recanted is the prime alternative suspect in the case and has been in and out of jail numerous times. NAACP President Benjamin Jealous, who recently met with Mr. Davis for two hours on death row said, “Beyond a shadow of a doubt, this man is innocent.”

Troy had no prior criminal record and since he has been in prison, Davis has been a model prisoner and a valuable mentor to his young nephew, whose mother has breast cancer.

The courts have denied Troy an evidentiary hearing which would allow the evidence to be reexamined. A last ditch effort before the Supreme Court will be heard on June 25 but is not expected to prevail and his execution could come within weeks following the decision. The NAACP, which filed an amicus brief in the case, urging Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue to intervene. The new Savannah District Attorney, an African American, could also reopen the case, saving Troy’s life.

Troy Anthony Davis is an African American man who has spent the last 18 years on death row for a murder he did not commit. There is no physical evidence tying him to the crime and seven out of nine witnesses have recanted. New evidence and new testimony have been presented to the Georgia courts, but the justice system refuses to consider this evidence, which would prove Troy Davis’ innocence once and for all.

20. This is amazing. About 3 or 4 years ago Richard North Patterson
wrote a novel about just such a travesty. In the novel despite everyone admitting the convicted man is most likely innocent no one will allow a new look at the evidence. he is summarily executed for a crime everyone knows he did not commit. It seemed so improbable when I read it. This is unacceptable. If the current laws cannot save a man who is found to be innocent even after all appeals have been completed the law MUST be changed. His latest novel Eclipse is loosely based on the killing of 9 Nigerians for trying to help their people. Shell Oil just paid $15.5 million dollars to settle their contribution to ther killings.

46. thanks again, so much, MasonJar!! yes, Amnesty has been
amazing for Troy!!

you know, word has it that they - scotus - are trying to establish that it is constitutional to execute someone even when they have "a strong case for innocence." using all technicalities to get away with it.

troy didn't have any lawyer in his early appeal stages, since the feds had cut indigent defense money, and georgia ran out of that money. very infuriating story about that, via amnesty and the FreeTroy site.....

thanks again!!

I will reserve judgment about Mr. Davis' guilt or innocence -- until I know all the evidence that was presented by the prosecution to secure the conviction.

44. Just a couple of things here...
If there is the slightest doubt that Troy is not guilty of the crime, it would not do anyone any harm in a stay, reviewing the situation; commuting the sentence; or, if he is indeed innocent, setting him free. Death is a finality. If you were innocent, sitting on Death Row, don't you think you should have the opportunity to plead your case for clemency?

I am more than willing to take a look at the case and trial. If 7 of the 9 witnesses have recanted their testimony, something is wrong. There needs to be a hearing. What happens if this man is innocent, as so many believe, and he is killed? One individual life is worth the time to look into this.

On another note, there is no justification for the Death Penalty. The only reasons it exists in this country is because of a ridiculous notion that it somehow prevents violent crime, (if that were true, there would be no murder). The other reason is vengeance, and vengeance has nothing to do with Justice.

This nation is based on Justice, all we are asking for, is to ensure Justice is served. if this man is innocent, justice would be served by setting him free. If he is guilty, Justice will be served by life in prison. Virtually every other nation that considers itself "civilized" realized this a long time ago...why the United States, our country, insists on remaining in the Dark Ages on this, baffles even the simplest of minds.

An attorney friend told me once, "In America we don't have a justice system, we have a legal system." It's all a game. Truth, the well being of the people, are not part of that game.
