Brockovich: Midland, Texas Water Sullied
Source: CBS

(CBS) Erin Brockovich is back on the case again.

In an exclusive interview on The Early Show Wednesday from Midland, Texas, Brockovich discussed contaminated water she says has been found in the town.

...

And what does Brockovich say is in the water?

A substance she knows all-too-well: hexavalent chromium.

The same substance, also known as chromium-6, is what Brockovich found in the water in Hinkley, Calif.

1. I can't believe this is the only response so far
Hexavalent chromium is serious business. Someone at Schlumberger needs to have their head on the chopping block over this.

2. This typo is probably closest to the truth:
The Early Show asked Schlumberger for comment, and the company said in a statement: "Chromium has not been used in any of the processes performed at the Schlumberger facilities in Midland, Texas, and independent water samplings indicate that the source is likely an adjacent site unrelated or our facilities."

Obviously they meant "to our facilities."

I lived there when I was a child. I wonder what area of Midland. My aunt and uncle lived there until about ten years ago.

7. What is truly frightening is that water
seems to be so little valued by those who have money but no
common sense. Moving away or buying bottled water is not the
answer, but for many people in my area, the money from natural
gas drilling seems more important. What will they use for
showers? For watering the garden? For cooking? If plans to
hydrofrack large areas of NY state become a reality, we may
need more brave souls raising their voices to reveal what the
corporations will always deny.

15. Amen
We are having the same discussion/fight over our New Mexico's Otero Mesa that MAY have 2 days of natural gas (for the whole US), but contains pristine desert biodiversity and a clean water table that local Republicans want to trade for natural gas profits for the Yates family.

10. This is not the first time this has happened
It is so sad. It is such a great place for farming. It is an old sea bed, and will grow ANYTHING if you can get water to it. And the weather is just wonderful if you don't like much rain and very low humidity. It pretty much sucks in March with the dirt and wind.

I don't know which industry is responsible for that but it is like some of the refineries that are located on I-20 there. All the drilling that goes on out there has ruined other aquifers. The secondary salt water injection oil and gas recovery ruined my mom and dad's well.

I don't know what chemicals are used in tertiary recovery, but I guarantee you, those oil companies will put them down there if there's a dollar to be made.

And I'll guess 90 percent of them voted for Bush.

12. I saw the video... the Real Brockovich is dynamite
Had to search DU to avoid dupe... not much in response due to too many domestic RW nut balls in the news, I guess.

That's GW Bush territory, isn't it?

14. Poison in the Well
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NKfLjDdHwyk

Tell me what's gone wrong.
I tilt my head there, under the faucet, but when I turn it on -- dry as paper.
Call the neighbors.
Who's to blame for what's going on?
In the dark without a clue I'm just the same as you.

O, they tell us there's poison in the well,
that someone's been a bit untidy and there's been a small spill.
Not a lot, no, just a drop.
But there you are mistaken, you know you are.
I wonder just how long they knew our well was poisoned but they let us just drink on.

O, they tell us there's poison in the well,
that someone's been a bit untidy and there's been a small spill.
All that it amounts to is a tear in a salted sea.
Someone's been a bit untidy, they'll have it cleaned up in a week.
But the week is over and now it's grown into years since I was told that I should be calm, there's nothing to fear here.
But I drank that water for years, my wife and my children.

Tell me, where to now, if your fight for a bearable life can be fought and lost in you backyard?

O, don't tell us there's poison in the well,
that someone's been a bit untidy, that there's been a small spill.
All that it amounts to is a tear in a salted sea.
Someone's been a bit untidy, they'll have it cleaned up in a week.

16. We should get Brockovich to defend all of America's water . . ..
the synthetic chemicals/hormones the pharmaceutical industry is feeding the public

are in our waters now -- we're all enjoying them!!!

These are hormones given to animals to fatten them up, for one thing!!!
