LONDON - London's sprawling subway network was mostly shut down on Wednesday morning as union workers walked off the job in a dispute over pay.

Mayor Boris Johnson said the walkout was causing huge disruption for commuters and urged a resumption of talks on disputes over pay, disciplinary issues and job losses.

The Rail, Maritime and Transport union said thousands of London Underground workers would stay away from their posts for 48 hours

1. I was horrified by how much it costs to ride. Worse than Wash. DC's. nt

3. The Tube is pricey....unless you're visiting and buy one of those visitor passes.
Then it becomes quite a bargain.

4. It's based on travel within or between / across zones
If you're staying in central London then you may only need a single or maybe two zone ticket which doesn't cost bundles. If you're out to the NW just past zone 7 where I am then no its not very funny.

Whatever - the tube is a convenience device and it costs less than parking in central London anyway. My only cause to go in these days is for live music at night time when parking restrictions are off and I drive in.

BTW - residents in any of the London Boroughs, past retirement age, get free bus and tube travel.

10. I'd have thought
a travel card would've been better. Chiswick creeps into zone 3 but most of it is zone 2. Some details here : http://www.londontoolkit.com/briefing/travelcard.htm

Sometimes best for those of you visiting to post on the DU United Kingdom board for uptodate advice etc when coming over.

Hope you enjoyed your stay.

9. If you didn't like the Oyster (?)
visit the TfL website before you visit the next time and find out your options and costs.

London is expensive, but transport is a bargain for what you get for your money - if you do it wisely.

8. Buy an Oyster card - more convenient than a travel card
rechargeable and permanent. And cheaper in the long run.

5. London is one of the most expensive cities in the world.
Everything is exactly twice as expensive. Paris is only 1.5 times more expensive.

People my wife works with who work in London can't afford to live anywhere near London.
