London's Metropolitan Police accused of waterboarding suspects

Metropolitan Police officers subjected suspects to waterboarding, according to allegations at the centre of a major anti-corruption inquiry, The Times has learnt.

The torture claims are part of a wide-ranging investigation which also includes accusations that officers fabricated evidence and stole suspects’ property. It has already led to the abandonment of a drug trial and the suspension of several police officers.

However, senior policing officials are most alarmed by the claim that officers in Enfield, North London, used the controversial CIA interrogation technique to simulate drowning. ....

a sweet nothing ion Ton's ear. "Tony" he said, "waterboarding is a great way to make criminals confess and it keeps your police sharp too!"

6. It explains in the link "Cannabis case led to claims" on the Times page
It also says the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) is carrying out an independent inquiry into the allegations. They are taking it very seriously after the Met’s anti-corruption unit at Scotland Yard looked into the complaints made against several officers, including theft of property, and found reason to move forward. The cannabis case was dropped by the Crown Court so as not to compromise "a wideranging criminal investigation into the activities of a number of police officers."

UK police officers accused of waterboarding

Jun 9th, 2009 | LONDON -- Scotland Yard says six officers have been suspended after "serious allegations" about their behavior during the arrests of five suspects last year.

London's police force did not go into detail, but Sky News television and the Daily Mail newspaper are reporting the officers are accused of waterboarding drug suspects.

Scotland Yard said in a statement late Tuesday that Britain's police watchdog, the Independent Police Complaints Commission, is investigating. Calls and e-mails to the commission were not immediately returned.

Waterboarding, a type of simulated drowning, is almost universally condemned in Britain as torture. It has controversially been used by U.S. interrogators to squeeze information out of suspected terrorists.

16. Six Met police officers are accused of 'waterboarding' drug-raid suspects
Published Date: 10 June 2009

SIX Metropolitan Police officers have been suspended after they were accused of dunking suspects' heads in buckets of water, it emerged last night.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) confirmed it was investigating the conduct of Enfield-based officers during drugs raids in the borough in November last year, in which four men and a woman were arrested in Enfield and Tottenham ...

Police said that in the case being investigated for 'water-boarding' claims they found a large amount of cannabis and the suspects had been charged with trafficking a class C drug ...

17. Six Yard officers suspended over 'terror torture'
... As well as using waterboarding it is alleged detectives repeatedly held the suspects’ heads in buckets of dirty water ...

Most of the alleged victims are believed to have been foreign nationals detained in north London in a drugs operation in November last year ...

The six officers were part of a group of nine suspended in February. The nine, all part of the crime squad in Enfield, north London, were taken off duty over allegations concerning the “mishandling” of stolen flat-screen televisions, computers and other electrical goods.

It is believed the officers took the consumer goods from the suspects’ homes during the operation. Two months later, a Metropolitan Police employee made the allegations of “torture” to Scotland Yard’s anti-corruption squad. The Independent Police Complaints Commission has taken over the part of the inquiry focusing on alleged police brutality involving four men and a woman arrested in Enfield and Tottenham and charged with importing cannabis ...

18. How cannabis case led to claims of theft and violence by police
Edited on Tue Jun-09-09 08:59 PM by Turborama
Source: The Times (UK)

=snip=

Allegations of evidence fabrication and theft of suspects’ property developed into more serious claims that some individuals were subjected to violence and ill treatment amounting to torture. One claimant made an allegation of having been subjected to waterboarding.

The chain of events began last November when officers from Enfield carried out a series of raids. Addresses in Enfield and Tottenham were searched after a tip-off that people living there were involved in cannabis dealing.

Four men and a woman were arrested and charged with importation of a Class C drug.

On December 4 the defendants appeared before Enfield Magistrates’ Court and the case was committed for a Crown Court trial.

The drug case appears to have been the catalyst for an inquiry into activities at Edmonton station by the Scotland Yard Directorate of Professional Standards, the Met’s anti-corruption unit. This team is known in police slang as the Rubber Heelers — so named “because you can’t hear them coming”.

In this inquiry they appear to have lived up to their reputation. It is understood that video probes and covert listening devices were planted inside the police station to gather evidence.

19. And of course, when it doesn't work...
...you panic and go into coverup mode. Which makes things 10 times worse.

And even if you get somebody, you have to let them go because the evidence is poisioned.

26. When I first saw this story on the NY Times site
They used the term "waterboarding" in the head and in the lead. Now, they've scrubbed that and only mention the term further down in the story.
