<snip>A former US national security adviser who served in the administration of the first president George Bush, has warned that the war in Iraq threatens to grind on for years as the Vietnam conflict did.

"It could become a Vietnam in a way that the Vietnam war never did," Brent Scowcroft said in an interview published in a Portuguese weekly newspaper, Expresso.

7. The point is still valid, the occupation of Iraq will continue...
The point is still valid, the occupation of Iraq will continue regardless of who gets elected in November. Bush will not bring the troops home and neither will Kerry according to his own statement during the CNN debate last week.

Iraqization looks line a clone of Nixon's Vietnamization.

2. Scowcroft is a professional
Edited on Sun Feb-29-04 04:20 PM by teryang
I don't agree with his politics and I never liked his policies. He is a professional hatchet man, a trained killer and violator of the Constitution along with the rest of the BFEE. He's one of these career soldiers who believes that its ok to violate the law in order to save it.

But he knows a losing proposition when he sees one. Taking his comments in the worst possible light, maybe he is setting the stage for a great Chimp vindication, like the capture of OBL.

I can hear it now: "People said we neglected the war on terror. People said we couldn't do both, defeat Saddam and the weapons of mass destruction and fight the war on terror. But we persevered and we smoked em both out to their holes. And I'm the big hero."

I don't think Scowcroft can shake off his Army training. This is a defense contractor free for all and the costs to the armed forces are enormous but they are being ignored. Force readiness, force training, and manpower reserves are being wasted on a non-essential, poorly defined and ulitimately unattainable mission. Young people are avoiding recruitment like the plague and re-enlistment bonuses are being ignored. There is a lot of anti-military sentiment among the nations talented young people. Any restoration of sovereignty in Iraq will result in an anti American country.

The materialists in the administration simply don't care about these costs and can't imagine any situation in which they will result in near catastrophic military and diplomatic failures. I can think of several.

5. Thank you!
I mistook his demeanor for an Army man and made an assumption without even thinking.

8. He did graduate West Point '47, thus the confusion... I believe
graduates that year had the choice of Army or AF, since that was the year it was separated from the Army.

4. Scowcraft spoke out against this war before it began
It was speculated at the time that he was Poppy's mouthpiece, trying to get a message to Junior.
