Human chain protest in Taiwan (More than a million people)

More than a million people have linked hands the length of Taiwan in a demonstration against China.

The 500km human chain, organised by supporters of President Chen Shui-bian, was in protest at China's deployment of missiles against Taiwan.

China regards Taiwan as a breakaway province which should be reunited with the mainland - by force if necessary.

Analysts say the protest, three weeks before a presidential poll, will boost support for Mr Chen's re-election.

His sole challenger, Lien Chan, has organised rival events - including a marathon and concerts - to try to wrest back some of the media attention.

10. This was NOT a protest it was:

1. 228 means February 28, 1947 when a holocaust took place under the hands of Jong Jean Gwo (for some reason the West spells it Chiang Kai-shek).

2. This day had nothing to do with protest, It was a day to tell the world that Formosa was invaded by dirty Chinese Pigs from China. They butchered the population, renamed it to Taiwan and claimed it was China.

So little facts that Whores like CNN's Mike Chinoy forgot to publish in his reports. Probably because he has a secret bank account filled full of bribe blood money.

Darker's link to the video (above) showed a huge throng of people anxious to remind the world that they will not go quietly into that good night, ala Hong Kong.

Abian wins big, imo. I can't conceive he will win in anything less than a landslide.

Bush must now be exceedingly careful not to give the Chinese the wrong signals about how the US might respond to Chinese agression in the straits. He is such an inept jerk that I fear he feels he has looked into the mainland's soul and thinks he can trust it.

17. Remembering 228: Kaohsiung County surprises organizers

More than 120,000 people turned up for Kaohsiung County's "228 Hand-in-Hand Rally," a turnout that surprised even event organizers.

Gathering in Kaohsiung's rally headquarters in Gangshan (??), Kaohsiung County Commissioner Yang Chiu-hsing (???) and Minister of the Interior Yu Cheng-hsien (???), who was born in Kaohsiung, were excited about the number of participants.

Rally organizers in towns throughout Kaohsiung County reported that participants significantly exceeded the number of people who signed up for the event. Kaohsiung Mayor Frank Hsieh (???) was the general manager of the rally in southern Taiwan.

Yang, who stood atop a campaign car to greet the human chain in Kaohsiung -- a historical stronghold for the Democratic Progressive Party -- said that he saw large groups of people along the route rather than a thin human chain.

18. Human chain bears message of peace

About 100,000 people in Chunghua County and another 25,000 residents of Taichung County took part in yesterday's island-long human chain rally as a peaceful means of protest against China's military threat.

The highlight in Taichung was some 100 couples singing a famous Mandarin love song with Premier Yu Shyi-kun. In Chunghua County, participants carrying chrysanthemums gathered along the No. 1 Highway.

Chunghua County has earned its reputation for being at the heart of the nation's flower trade, and chrysanthemums are one of the county's biggest money-making products.

Speaking under the scorching sun in Taichung City yesterday after-noon, Yu told the couples holding hands with him and his wife, Yang Bao-yu (???), on Fu-in Road that he hoped Feb. 28 would from now on become a wonderful day to remember instead of a tragic day to mourn.

19. Families and dogs bring festive atmosphere to Taipei

It was a sunny, bright day, ideal for a weekend outing. Young couples brought their toddlers out to enjoy the sunshine and festive atmosphere, and many people walked their dogs to the place where they were to join the nationwide 228 Hand-in-Hand Rally in Taipei.

The rally mainly spread out on Chunghsiao E. Road, and from there went past the Legislative Yuan and Ketagalan Boulevard and into the 228 Memorial Park.

According to the city councilors in charge of the rally in Taipei, more than 100,000 people took part in the nation's capital. The organizers originally planned to have a single line going through the city, but the sheer number of participants resulted in parallel lines forming in several places.

20. Taipei County forms 22km-long link in the human chain

A 22km-long link in the 228 Hand-in-Hand Rally was formed in Taipei County yesterday by around 150,000 people joining hands.

Beginning in Luchou and cutting through Hsinchung, Sang-chung and Hsihchih before continuing into Taipei City, the human chain was formed yesterday with local residents counting down to 2:28pm along with county commissioner Su Tseng-chang (???).

"I feel pride knowing that 150,000 Taipei County residents came out today. Participants will be able to tell their grandchildren that on Feb. 28 this year, they stood up and protected a portion of Taipei county," Su said.

A diverse group of people took part in Taipei County, with people of all ages and backgrounds finding different ways to express solidarity.

The Taiwanese Presbyterian Church marked the day with prayers for the nation in Hsinchung. One man at the Sangchung rally headquarters shouted "Go Taiwan!" while chewing a betel nut. Another brought his entire family and their two dogs, both sporting colorful Chen Shui-bian (???) promotional paraphernalia.
