Osama captured in Pakistan: Iranian state radio
From Pakistan Daily Times, for what it's worth.

http://www.dailytimes.com.pk/default.asp?page=story_29-2-2004_pg1_7

Exerpt:
TEHRAN: Osama Bin Laden has been captured in a tribal area of Pakistan, the external Pashto-language service of Iranian state radio reported on Saturday quoting an “informed source”, stated AFP.

The report, which could not be independently verified, said the alleged arrest took place “some time ago” but gave no further details.

It went on to claim that US officials were keeping news of the arrest secret and were likely to announce it later in the year — in order to help US President George Bushh’s re-election chances in November polls, AFP added. “The capture of the Al Qaeda leader was made some time ago, but President Bush is intending to announce it at the time of the American presidential election,” the report claimed.

1. We have been through this before.
Not only is this a dupe, but it is extremely bogus at best.

14. OBL demands bodyguards to kill him if indangered.

<snip> <http://www.atimes.com/atimes/Central_Asia/FB26Ag02.html>

And what if bin Laden decides not to follow the script? According to sources close to the Pakistani newspaper Khabrain, bin Laden has made his seven bodyguards take an oath to kill him in the event that he is in any danger of being arrested. He will try to blow himself up. Western diplomatic sources, on the other hand, prefer to insist that if bin Laden is arrested according to the current Pentagon plan, the whole operation will be kept secret - to be disclosed only a few weeks or days before the American presidential election in November.

2. Good
Osama's captured, now his hundreds of thousands of followers will just come crawling to our doors and surrender. :eyes:

Glad this came out now, so bushbastard* can't exploit it come autumn 2004...

It's all over google right now.

Except for this: http://www.bushcountry.org/news/columnists/jreynalds/c_012404_jreynalds_osama_captured.htm (the bushlicking* page says otherwise...)

3. It's worth little
The Pakistan Times reporting a broadcast from Iran state radio is hardly what I'd call objective or reliable. While I would not put such an action past the Administration, I seriously doubt they have been able to locate him.

5. Didn't they release the news of Saddam's "capture" a day or
two before Saddam was "found?"

Now, that doesn't make them reliable, but it does mean that it shouldn't be dismissed out of hand.

7. Not sure about that
But I do not think a radio station run by the Iranian government is the best source of information. At the very least, anything they say should be taken with a grain of salt.

aren't the best source of information. On that we agree.

The point is that although clearly slanted, and likely corrupt to the core the Iranians have reported accurately in the past. An example of that is that they had the Saddam capture story a full day before Saddam was supposed to have been captured. That story turned out to be true. Now, they could have been lucky that time, but the report supposedly came from the Kurds. The Kurds held Saddam before he was "captured" by the Americans.

Now, this OBL story could be simple propaganda from the Iranians. Or it could be true. Time will tell.

9. A coprophagic freeper who apparently is an employee of ABC News
posted this rumor late last night. This person also posted the fact of Saddam's capture a short time before any news media were reporting it. The first reference I found in a Google News search to the Iranian radio report was on Haaretz.com 12 hours ago.

10. This is starting to sound like the WMD discoveries from last Spring
Therefore, I will check it the same way that I checked those last year -- namely, by looking at the BBC home page.

BBC banners as of 3:30 pm PST:

Man blows himself up outside mosque in Pakistani city of Rawalpindi
Saudi Arabia steps up controls on overseas charity work
African leaders announce plans for multi-national military force
King of Morocco arrives for much delayed visit to quake-hit region. More soon.

Lead stories:

Haiti Rebels halt capital assault
Splits delay Iraq basic law deal
Missile raid kills Gaza militant

Where's Osama? Not on the BBC home page.

12. ABB, especially if Bin Laden is caught before the GE.
He should have been taking out during Tora Bora like Kerry has said. I remember watching that war and I was so pissed that we did not commit any real resources to do the job effectively. And why, because Iraq was so much more important to Bush then Getting the terrorists that killed 3000 Americans. This is why Bush has failed on getting OBL.

19. We also missed another opportunity
WASHINGTON, Oct 14: A journalist claimed on Saturday that the US military had Taliban leader Mullah Mohammad Omar in its sights on the first night of its bombing raids on Afghanistan but failed to kill him.

Seymour Hersh, writing in the New Yorker magazine, cites intelligence and military sources on the incident which reportedly had Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld "kicking a lot of glass and breaking doors". US officials have said that two adult members of Mullah Omar's family were killed on the first night of the raids on Oct 7.

Hersh said the precise sequence of events was unclear, but that a US reconnaissance aircraft had identified a convoy carrying Mullah Omar on Sunday night. However, under rules of engagement at the time, the CIA could not order the plane to fire its anti-tank missiles.

Instead a building housing the Taliban spiritual leader was targeted by F-18 jets - after Mullah Omar had left. Hersh said reaction in Washington to the missed opportunity was fierce. One unnamed military official said Rumsfeld "was kicking a lot of glass and breaking doors", and intelligence officials were said to be "crestfallen".-Reuters

15. I remember
shortly after we started bombing Afghanistan there was an article in some Inidan paper that said bin Laden was dead and they even wwent so far as to describe the memorial service that was just a gathering attended by immediate family.

Who knows if he is alive or dead but I'd put money on a lot more chatter about him leaading up to the election. Bush didn't get much of a bounce from Saddam's capture, so he'll have to milk the hunt for bin Laden for all it's worth for the next few months.

Just great, now we are going to have suffer somebody posting this every couple of hours. Just how many times does a story have to be debunked before people stop posting it?

LBN was once a good resource, but now its nothing but a trash bin.
