TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Gov. Jeb Bush is considering calling for the end of trust funds for affordable housing, to the outrage of both business and activist groups, after proposing that money be pulled from the program for the second year in a row.
"The governor believes that we should seriously consider sunsetting trust funds," said Alia Faraj, a Bush spokeswoman, on Friday. "This allows us to ensure these programs continue with general revenue dollars, but also gives us the flexibility to meet the state's priorities."
In 1992, the state started a 20-cent tax on every $1,000 spent on real estate transactions. The tax was funneled into two trust funds to be spent by state and local governments on affordable housing. Those funds come up for its regular four-year reauthorization this year.

"Everybody's for it, there is not one single solitary interest group that opposes the full funding," said Jaimie Ross, affordable housing director at 1000 Friends of Florida. "The only threat to the state and local housing trust fund comes from the governor's office."
