Social Security won't accept SF marriage licenses as ID
Social Security won't accept SF marriage licenses as ID
The Associated Press

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - The Social Security Administration has told its offices nationwide not to accept marriage certificates from San Francisco as proof of identification for newlyweds looking to make name changes on Social Security cards.

The new policy doesn't just apply to the 3,344 same-sex couples that married in San Francisco during the last two weeks. Heterosexual couples who wed after Feb. 12 also need to supply documents other than San Francisco-issued marriage licenses if they want to change the names on their Social Security cards.

2. What does DOMA have to do with the heterosexual marriages?
Doesn't anyone find that part more than a little odd?

9. Simple really...
...if the government deciced NOT to discriminate against the LGBT community from the start, then none of this would be happening now.

Couples would be going getting their licences, marrying, and going off to social security and other places and using their marriage licences to get their names changed.

Nothing odd about it. Common sense really.

4. Not in California - you can change your name to whatever you want
Just because you want to. No paperwork or court order required. All you do is go to the DMV, tell them your new name, pay a few bucks ($5 is what it was when I did it) get a new photo ID with the new name, take that to the SS and they'll change your name on the spot. New SS card shows up in the mail a few weeks later.

Bottom line is you don't need the marriage certificate in order to change your name here, you can take your spouse's name just because you want to and because you say so.

5. What about divorce papers?
I'm sure good ole Neil Bush will be able to use his divorce decree as ID. Possibly his STD medical report too. And maybe his reciept for those hookers. Oh, that's right, someone else paid for his adulterous pleasure. What a bunch of hypocrits.

6. so don't change your name...
it's a pretty patriarchal practice to begin with.

And it does seem to piss off the right wingers so much if a woman keeps her own name rather than taking her husband's

This is more symbolic than anything. Because they don't have a leg to stand on. I hope someone takes them to court over this anyway.

7. A lot of couples now use blended or hyphenated names
Edited on Sat Feb-28-04 09:29 AM by kayell
Some take the female partners name (in a het union) as a means of redressing past wrongs. (of course, since it was probably her dads name...) In any case, I think it is up to the individuals involved to choose what they want to do. (although I agree with you about the patriarchal bit)

This just f-ing petty. Typical * administration tactics. I think you are right about the court cases coming to them.
