UN Security Council to meet in emergency on North Korea’s nuclear test

25/05/2009

The UN Security Council will hold emergency consultations at 4 p.m. Monday afternoon to discuss North Korea’s nuclear test.

The proposal was made by Japan through the Russian Federation which chairs the Security Council for the month of May.

This latest test by the Democratic Peoples' Republic of Korea -DPRK, is seen as a violation of a 2006 Security Council resolution which bans Pyongyang from pursuing nuclear or ballistic missile programmes.

That resolution- termed resolution 1718 was adopted shortly after the DPRK conducted its first nuclear test. It also calls for halting trade in weapons with the country.

And just recently, on 13 April, the UN Security Council adopted a presidential statement on North Korea's launching of a rocket on April 5, condemning it as a violation of resolution 1718.

4. Yes, I understand it's his job. My lament is that so much is being piled up on him.
It was not a complaint about Obama.

6. I know. I really have no answers because so far it just seems to be a stale mate with both parties
going around and around.

7. My thoughts exactly.
A condemnation by the UN strikes me as the easiest way to ensure another test.
